Linux Internship information

What is a Linux internship?

A Linux Internship is a temporary position designed for students or entry-level professionals to gain hands-on experience with Linux operating systems. Interns typically work on tasks such as system administration, scripting, troubleshooting, and configuring Linux-based environments. They may assist with software installation, monitor system performance, and support IT teams in maintaining infrastructure. This role helps interns build practical skills in Linux and related technologies, often serving as a stepping stone to full-time roles in system administration, DevOps, or cybersecurity.

What kind of projects or daily tasks can I expect during a Linux internship?

As a Linux Intern, you may assist with system administration tasks such as managing user accounts, monitoring system performance, and deploying updates or patches. You might also help automate routine processes with scripting, support troubleshooting efforts, and participate in the configuration of servers or development environments. Many teams encourage interns to contribute to real projects under the mentorship of experienced engineers, offering exposure to collaborative workflows and modern DevOps tools. This hands-on experience is designed to build your technical skills and prepare you for future full-time opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Linux internship position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Linux Intern, you need a foundational understanding of Linux operating systems, command-line interface usage, and basic scripting languages such as Bash or Python, often supported by coursework in computer science or information technology. Familiarity with tools like Git, Docker, and basic networking concepts, as well as optional certifications like CompTIA Linux+, can provide a strong technical advantage. Effective communication, eagerness to learn, and problem-solving skills are valuable soft assets in a collaborative environment. These abilities are crucial for quickly adapting to real-world technical challenges and contributing to projects in a professional IT setting.

Job description

Amazon is seeking exceptional talent to help develop the next generation of advanced robotics systems that will transform automation at Amazon's scale. We're building revolutionary robotic systems that combine cutting-edge AI, sophisticated control systems, and advanced mechanical design to create adaptable automation solutions capable of working safely alongside humans in dynamic environments. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of robotics and automation at an unprecedented scale, working with world-class teams pushing the boundaries of what's possible in robotic manipulation, locomotion, and human-robot interaction.
If you're passionate about building robust, scalable software for complex robotic systems and want to work across the full robotics stack-from low-level system interfaces to high-level application logic-then we'd like to talk to you about becoming part of an organization with global impact on millions of customers.
Key job responsibilities
The ideal candidate is enthusiastic about building the right solutions for our customers and will collaborate with other teams to ensure that our product meets Amazon-scale requirements. They will:
- Design, develop, and maintain production software for robotic systems in C++ and/or Python, spanning perception, motion planning, controls, and application layers.
- Work with multiple system components including sensor integration, networking, safety systems, and real-time actuation on modern robotic hardware.
- Contribute to the architecture of complex robotics software systems and work effectively with team members to implement solutions.
- Build simulation, testing, and CI/CD infrastructure to validate robot behaviors before deployment to physical hardware.
- Debug and troubleshoot complex system-level issues across software, firmware, and hardware boundaries.
- Develop solutions that balance performance, reliability, and maintainability under the guidance of senior engineers.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 3+ years of programming with at least one software programming language experience
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Robotics, or related field
- 2+ years of experience contributing to the design or architecture of new and existing systems
- Direct, hands-on experience developing software for robotic or complex mechatronic systems
- Proficiency in C++ and/or Python with experience building production-grade software
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of full software development life cycle experience, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations
- Experience with ROS/ROS2 frameworks and robotic middleware
- Exposure to multiple robotics domains: SLAM/navigation, manipulation/grasping, perception/computer vision, motion planning, or robot applications
- Experience with real-time software development, multithreaded programming, or embedded Linux environments
- Familiarity with simulation tools (Gazebo, Isaac Sim, MuJoCo, or equivalent)
- Experience deploying software to physical robotic platforms in industrial or production settings
- Experience with open-source Linux-based development tools and architectures
- Knowledge of sensor integration (cameras, LiDAR, IMU, force/torque sensors) and calibration techniques
