As an intern at GF, you'll experience one-on-one mentorship, work assignments that prioritize your growth and potential, professional development opportunities, and the chance to network with executives.
Summary of Role:
GlobalFoundries' RF Technology Development team is seeking a summer 2027 engineering intern who enjoys writing code and automating complex engineering workflows. In this hands-on role, you will own real deliverables with support from a named mentor, work within live technology development projects, and build scripts and tools that improve how the team creates, checks, and releases test structures, process design kits, design manuals, test-site data, and verification decks.
Essential Responsibilities include:
  • Write and maintain Python, Shell, and Tcl scripts that automate design manual generation, ground-rule validation builds, PDK builds, releases, and regression checks.

  • Build internal tools and dashboards that consolidate spreadsheets and logs into a current view of project status.

  • Automate data extraction and reporting from test-site, design-manual, and verification sources to reduce manual data entry and improve consistency.

  • Develop and extend regression test suites so kit and deck changes are validated automatically before release.

  • Improve version-control and continuous-integration practices through repeatable builds, code review, and reusable scripts.

  • Translate complex manual engineering workflows into documented automation that can be maintained and reused by the team.

  • Own assigned deliverables, collaborate with engineering stakeholders, and present project results to the broader technology development organization at the end of the internship.

Other Responsibilities:
  • Perform all activities in a safe and responsible manner and support all Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements and programs.

Required Qualifications:
  • Education - At least a sophomore at time of application and actively pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related field through an accredited degree program during the time of internship.

  • Must have at least an overall 3.0 GPA and be in good academic standing.

  • Language Fluency - English (Written & Verbal)

  • Ability to work at least 40 hours per week during the internship.

  • Comfortable writing Python and able to read and debug code written by others.

  • Familiarity with Linux, command-line environments, and version control using Git.

  • Demonstrated interest in programming through personal projects, open-source contributions, competitions, research, coursework, or independently developed automation.

  • Ability to break down a loosely defined manual process into clear steps and implement those steps in code.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior related internship or co-op experience

  • Demonstrated prior leadership experience in the workplace, school projects, competitions, etc.

  • Strong interest in leveraging AI tools and emerging technologies to enhance productivity, streamline workflows, and support effective decision-making.

  • Project management skills, i.e., the ability to innovate and execute on solutions that matter; the ability to navigate ambiguity.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong planning & organizational skills

  • Exposure to semiconductor device physics, VLSI design, or layout and CAD tool flows.

  • Scripting experience with Tcl, SKILL, Perl, or Shell in addition to Python.

  • Experience with data-handling libraries such as pandas or with plotting and dashboard tools.

  • Exposure to continuous integration, test automation, or build systems.

  • Curiosity about semiconductor manufacturing and technology development; prior industry experience is not required.
