Position Overview

The Riverside Research Information Technology team is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Linux System Administrator to support teams that deploy software products to Department of Defense and Intelligence Community networks. The Linux System Administrator is responsible for the installation, configuration, maintenance, security, and performance of Linux-based systems and services across the enterprise environment. This role requires strong troubleshooting skills, experience with automation, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment supporting critical business systems. This position is located at the Beavercreek, Ohio office and is a short-term position ending in December 2026.


Key ResponsibilitiesLinux Systems Administration
  • Install, configure, maintain, and support Linux clients and servers in physical and virtual environments, ensuring high availability and security compliance.
  • Manage Linux operating systems, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Rocky Linux, Ubuntu, and other enterprise distributions.
  • Perform operating system upgrades, patch management, and security hardening.
  • Apply security updates and patches to Linux operating systems.
  • Manage user access integrated with Active Directory, LDAP, or other identity management solutions.
Troubleshooting, Monitoring, and Recovery
  • Troubleshoot and resolve server, application, storage, and network-related issues.
  • Monitor operations and applications using Linux-based logging and monitoring tools to diagnose and resolve performance issues.
  • Remediate periodic compliance scans.
  • Repair and recover from hardware or software failures.
Automation and Technical Documentation
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts using Bash, Python, Ansible, or similar tools.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, standard operating procedures, and system diagrams.
Coordination and Communication
  • Coordinate with Tier 3 functional roles within the information technology team as needed.
  • Coordinate and communicate significant information technology changes and outages with appropriate parties, including the customer, management, and information security.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QualificationsEducation
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or another related field of study.
Experience
  • 5+ years of experience administering enterprise Linux environments.
  • Strong, verifiable experience in Linux system administration, including configuration, patching, user management, and security hardening.
  • Experience with automation using Ansible or similar tools.
  • Experience with virtualization technologies such as VMware vSphere.
  • Experience working on deployment environments, including virtual machines.
  • Knowledge of SSH, SCP, TCP/IP networking, DNS, DHCP, and firewall concepts.
Skills
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and responsible team player able to work independently with minimal daily direction.
  • Effective and efficient written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work and interact with technically and organizationally diverse personnel.
Certifications
  • DoD 8140 Intermediate Certification, such as CompTIA Security+ or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications
  • At least 5 years of experience performing systems administration.
  • Experience across the traditional IT stack, including clients, networking, servers, and storage.
  • Familiarity with enterprise PKI, SSL/TLS certificates, and security compliance frameworks.
  • Experience with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and DevOps practices.
  • Experience applying STIGs or CIS Benchmarks to Linux operating systems, Windows operating systems, network devices, ESXi hosts, or required applications.
  • Experience building systems and maintaining tools such as Bitbucket, Bamboo, GitLab, or similar tools.
  • Experience working or developing in multi-domain, multi-cloud, or hybrid-cloud environments.
