What does a Linux build engineer do?

A Linux Build Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining build systems for software projects that run on Linux operating systems. They automate build processes, manage dependencies, troubleshoot build failures, and ensure that software compiles and packages correctly. Additionally, they often collaborate with development and operations teams to streamline continuous integration and delivery pipelines, improving deployment efficiency and software quality.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Linux build engineer?

To thrive as a Linux Build Engineer, you need strong expertise in Linux system administration, scripting languages (such as Bash or Python), and build automation concepts, often backed by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with build tools like Jenkins, Git, Docker, and configuration management systems such as Ansible or Puppet is typically required. Problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure reliable, efficient build processes and enable smooth collaboration in fast-paced development environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by Linux build engineers in managing build automation pipelines?

Linux Build Engineers often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistency across multiple environments, troubleshooting complex build failures, and integrating new tools into existing CI/CD pipelines. They must ensure that builds remain reproducible and stable as codebases and dependencies evolve. Collaboration with development, QA, and operations teams is essential to quickly address issues and optimize the build process, making strong communication and problem-solving skills critical in this role.

What is the difference between Linux Build Engineer vs Linux System Administrator?

AspectLinux Build EngineerLinux System Administrator
Primary FocusBuilding, maintaining, and optimizing Linux software builds and automationManaging, configuring, and maintaining Linux systems and servers
Skills & CertificationsLinux scripting, build tools (e.g., Jenkins), version control, Linux certifications (e.g., RHCE)Linux system management, networking, security, certifications like RHCE or CompTIA Linux+
Work EnvironmentDevelopment teams, CI/CD pipelines, software companiesIT departments, data centers, enterprise environments
Common TasksAutomating builds, troubleshooting build failures, integrating softwareSystem setup, user management, troubleshooting hardware/software issues

While both roles require Linux expertise and certifications like RHCE, Linux Build Engineers focus on software build processes and automation, whereas Linux System Administrators manage and maintain Linux infrastructure. The roles often collaborate but serve different core functions within organizations.

Job description

We're building safety-enhancing technology for aviation that will save lives. We're building safety-enhancing technology for aviation that will save lives. Automated aviation systems will enable a future where air transportation is safer, more convenient and fundamentally transformative to the way goods - and eventually people - move around the planet. We are a team of engineers with experience across aerospace, robotics and self-driving cars working to make this future a reality.

Flight Software links together the mechanical, avionics, algorithmic, and embedded worlds to actually make the airplane fly. As a Build Software Engineer, you will own the systems that enable quick and reliable building, testing, and deployment of the entire flight software suite prior to flight. A build software engineer sees lengthy build times as a core developer experience impediment and creates systems to make the whole organization more efficient.

Responsibilities
In your role as Build Software Engineer, you will shape the build and continuous integration design for C++ and Rust software products both on-premise and in the cloud. You will also lead optimization of that infrastructure to ensure all software builds supporting flight are fast and repeatable across environments. You will work in a highly collaborative environment and coordinate with multiple stakeholders across engineering and IT functions.

Basic Success Criteria

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience

  • 5+ years of experience large scale or mission critical environments implementing methodologies of continuous build, integration, and delivery (CI / CD)

  • 5+ years experience in C++

  • 2+ years of professional experience managing a modern C++ build system (Cmake, Bazel, ninja)

  • Experience with release automation and configuration management tools

Preferred Success Criteria

  • Experience with performance optimization such as identifying and resolving bottlenecks in Linux and AWS, optimizing containers to enable efficient scaling, and lowering costs

  • Experience with Sonatype Nexus or similar artifact management systems

  • 1+ years experience in Rust

  • Experience working with AWS in a production environment

As a Build Software Engineer, you will be part of the Platform Software team. The Platform Software team is responsible for providing the low level embedded software and build infrastructure necessary to enable the development, test, and deployment of our autonomous aircraft software. This infrastructure consists of everything from multi-language build systems, hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) testbed configuration, continuous integration pipelines, and cloud-based simulation container deployments. You will drive the optimization of our current infrastructure tooling as well as designing and developing the future of our team's development pipeline. You will help develop and maintain essential tools that enable developers at Reliable Robotics to deliver software products that are safe, successful, and meet certification requirements.

This position requires access to information that is subject to U.S. export controls. An offer of employment will be contingent upon the applicant's capacity to perform in compliance with U.S. export control laws.

All applicants are asked to provide documentation that legally establishes status as a U.S. person or non-U.S. person (and nationalities in the case of a non-U.S. person). Where the applicant is not a U.S. person, meaning not a (i) U.S. citizen or national, (ii) U.S. lawful permanent resident, (iii) refugee under 8 U.S.C. * 1157, or (iv) asylee under 8 U.S.C. * 1158, or not otherwise permitted to access the export-controlled technology without U.S. government authorization, the Company reserves the right not to apply for an export license for such applicants whose access to export-controlled technology or software source code requires authorization and may decline to proceed with the application process and any offer of employment on that basis.

At Reliable Robotics, our goal is to be a diverse and inclusive workforce. As an Equal Opportunity Employer, we do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, creed, ancestry, sex, gender (including pregnancy, childbirth, breastfeeding, or related medical conditions), gender identity, gender expression, sexual orientation, age, non-disqualifying physical or mental disability or medical conditions, national origin, military or veteran status, genetic information, marital status, or any other basis covered by applicable law.
