Linux Build Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Linux Build Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Linux Build Engineer, you need strong expertise in Linux system administration, scripting languages (such as Bash or Python), and build automation concepts, often backed by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with build tools like Jenkins, Git, Docker, and configuration management systems such as Ansible or Puppet is typically required. Problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure reliable, efficient build processes and enable smooth collaboration in fast-paced development environments.

What does a Linux Build Engineer do?

A Linux Build Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining build systems for software projects that run on Linux operating systems. They automate build processes, manage dependencies, troubleshoot build failures, and ensure that software compiles and packages correctly. Additionally, they often collaborate with development and operations teams to streamline continuous integration and delivery pipelines, improving deployment efficiency and software quality.

What are some typical challenges faced by Linux Build Engineers in managing build automation pipelines?

Linux Build Engineers often encounter challenges such as maintaining consistency across multiple environments, troubleshooting complex build failures, and integrating new tools into existing CI/CD pipelines. They must ensure that builds remain reproducible and stable as codebases and dependencies evolve. Collaboration with development, QA, and operations teams is essential to quickly address issues and optimize the build process, making strong communication and problem-solving skills critical in this role.

What is the difference between Linux Build Engineer vs Linux System Administrator?

AspectLinux Build EngineerLinux System Administrator
Primary FocusBuilding, maintaining, and optimizing Linux software builds and automationManaging, configuring, and maintaining Linux systems and servers
Skills & CertificationsLinux scripting, build tools (e.g., Jenkins), version control, Linux certifications (e.g., RHCE)Linux system management, networking, security, certifications like RHCE or CompTIA Linux+
Work EnvironmentDevelopment teams, CI/CD pipelines, software companiesIT departments, data centers, enterprise environments
Common TasksAutomating builds, troubleshooting build failures, integrating softwareSystem setup, user management, troubleshooting hardware/software issues

While both roles require Linux expertise and certifications like RHCE, Linux Build Engineers focus on software build processes and automation, whereas Linux System Administrators manage and maintain Linux infrastructure. The roles often collaborate but serve different core functions within organizations.

Title and Summary

Software Engineer IIJob Title
Software Engineer II - Cloud Engineering
About the Role
We are looking for a Software Engineer II to join our Cloud Engineering team. This role is ideal for engineers who have moved beyond fundamentals and are ready to build, operate, and automate cloud platforms at scale, while continuing to grow depth in AWS, Kubernetes, and Infrastructure-as-Code.
You will work closely with senior and lead engineers to design, build, and maintain cloud-native infrastructure and platforms that support critical workloads. This is a hands-on engineering role - you will write code, ship infrastructure, troubleshoot real production issues, and learn how large-scale platforms are operated in an enterprise environment.
What You'll Do
Design, build, and maintain cloud infrastructure on AWS using Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform)
Contribute to the provisioning and operation of Kubernetes platforms (Amazon EKS, KOPS)
Support Linux-based systems (primarily Ubuntu) used across cloud environments
Collaborate on designing secure, scalable, and resilient cloud architectures
Write and maintain automation and tooling using Python, GoLang, or comparable languages
Assist with incident troubleshooting, root-cause analysis, and platform stability improvements
Apply basic networking concepts (VPCs, subnets, routing, load balancing, security groups)
Partner with SRE, Security, and Application teams to deliver platform capabilities
Follow engineering best practices: code reviews, documentation, testing, and operational readiness
What We're Looking For
Required Skills & Experience
2-4 years of experience in software or cloud engineering
Hands-on experience with AWS (EC2, VPC, IAM, EKS or similar services)
Practical experience using Terraform (modules, state, deployments)
Working knowledge of Kubernetes (EKS, KOPS, or equivalent)
Strong fundamentals in Linux administration (Ubuntu preferred)
Understanding of basic networking concepts:
VPCs, CIDR ranges, subnets
Security groups, routing, DNS, load balancing
Programming experience in Python or GoLang (or strong proficiency in at least one language)
Experience working with Git-based workflows and CI/CD pipelines
Ability to troubleshoot issues logically and communicate clearly across teams
Nice to Have
Experience operating production Kubernetes clusters
Exposure to observability tools (logs, metrics, alerting)
Familiarity with cloud security concepts and IAM best practices
Experience building internal developer platforms or shared infrastructure
Interest in automation, platform engineering, and reliability practices
What Success Looks Like in This Role
You can independently deliver well-scoped cloud and infrastructure changes
Your Terraform code is reusable, reviewed, and production-ready
You contribute meaningfully to platform operations and incident resolution
You proactively learn from senior engineers and apply feedback quickly
You improve platforms not just by building, but by making them more reliable and usable
Why Join Cloud Engineering
Work on critical cloud platforms used by teams across the organization
Learn from experienced senior and lead engineers
Exposure to large-scale AWS and Kubernetes environments
Strong culture of automation, engineering rigor, and continuous improvementMastercard is a merit-based, inclusive, equal opportunity employer that considers applicants without regard to gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, disabled or veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
