They manage servers, ensure system security, monitor performance, and handle tasks such as software updates, backups, and user management. These engineers play a critical role in keeping enterprise-grade Linux environments stable and secure, often working closely with development and operations teams. Their expertise is essential for organizations relying on Linux-based systems for their applications and services.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Linux administration engineer?

To thrive as a Linux Administration Engineer, you need deep expertise in Linux operating systems, scripting languages like Bash or Python, and a strong understanding of networking and system security, typically backed by a degree in computer science or related certifications such as RHCE. Proficiency with configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet), virtualization platforms, and monitoring systems is crucial. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you address complex issues and work collaboratively with IT teams. These competencies ensure reliable server performance, secure infrastructure, and efficient issue resolution in dynamic technical environments.

Our AI-native platform, Air Enterprise Readiness, aligns development, production, delivery, and sustainment into one coordinated execution system for government agencies and industrial suppliers. As a DevOps Director, you will be pivotal in shaping and driving our software delivery pipelines, testing frameworks, and infrastructure reliability to new heights.

As a DevOps and QA Manager at Air, you will lead a team of skilled DevOps and Software Development Engineers in Test (SDETs) through the entire software development and release lifecycle. You will oversee CI/CD implementations, set rigorous automation and manual testing standards, and ensure the supreme reliability of deliverables. Your leadership will be essential in bridging the gap between development and operations, building scalable cloud infrastructure, and promoting innovation and efficiency within the team.
This role is a full-time position located out of our office in Pittsburgh, PA.

Scope of Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the software engineering and product teams to ensure highly reliable platform delivery for government customers
  • Lead and mentor a unified team of DevOps and SDETs, guiding them from test planning to deployment, and fostering a collaborative and productive work environment
  • Organize and manage automation strategies, infrastructure scaling, and release schedules, ensuring efficient project execution and alignment with business goals
  • Establish CI/CD, security, and automated testing best practices and standards for the team, driving excellence in continuous software delivery
  • Take charge of developing, maintaining, and scaling cloud infrastructure, deployment pipelines, and testing suites, ensuring they meet rigorous security and quality standards
  • Oversee the quality of all technical deliverables, including infrastructure as code (IaC), test automation scripts, and system monitoring, to maintain high standards of platform stability
  • Collaborate closely with Air's leadership to translate business requirements into infrastructure and testing specifications, ensuring the successful deployment of software solutions
  • Continuously seek innovation and process improvement opportunities, finding efficiencies in environment provisioning and test execution to drive the team's success
  • Work collaboratively with forward-deployed engineers, software developers, and data scientists to enhance our platform's overall security, quality, and performance
Qualifications
  • U.S. Citizenship is required
Required Skills:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent experience
  • 7+ years of experience in managing cloud infrastructure, DevOps pipelines, or Quality Assurance teams
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on technical experience with CI/CD tools (e.g., GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, Jenkins) and automated testing frameworks (e.g., Selenium, Cypress, JUnit)
  • 5+ years of people management
  • Thorough understanding of microservice architectures, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Proven experience leading teams using an Agile development framework
  • Strong analytical skills and unwavering attention to detail
Desired Skills:
  • Current possession of a U.S. security clearance, or the ability to obtain one with our sponsorship
  • Experience in or exposure to the nuances of a startup or other entrepreneurial environment
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation
  • Strong knowledge of observability, monitoring, and alerting tools (e.g., Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana)
  • Hands-on experience with performance, load, and security testing methodologies
  • Knowledge of DevSecOps practices and implementing security scanning in deployment pipelines
  • Familiarity with Linux administration and shell scripting (Bash, Python)
We firmly believe that past performance is the best indicator of future performance. If you thrive while building solutions to complex problems, are a self-starter, and are passionate about making an impact in global security, we're eager to hear from you.
