Job description

 APPRENTICE LINEMAN FOR TRANSMISSION LINE CONSTRUCTION (Georgia Statewide)

 
Description
Georgia Power is seeking experienced Apprentice Lineman candidates for statewide employment in Transmission construction. This position requires prior transmission line work experience and basic knowledge of wire pulling equipment and procedures. The Apprentice lineman will also be required to pass a pre- employment evaluation and demonstrate that he/she possesses the common skills, knowledge, and physical ability required to be successful in this position. This job requires weekly travel, and all travel expenses and hotel cost are the responsibility of the employee and a daily per diem (allowance) will be provided to help cover these costs. The current rate is $178 a day for those employees accruing overnight lodging and working 50 miles from their home. This is an item covered by the Memorandum of Agreement between Georgia Power Company and the IBEW Local No. 84.
 

HQ Location: 205 Southfield Parkway, Forest Park, GA but you will be assigned to work assignments throughout the State of Georgia

Job Summary 

There are multiple openings for Apprentice Lineman who work in the construction of Transmission Lines throughout the state of Georgia.

Candidates hired as Apprentice Lineman must have 1 year or more as Journeyman Lineman experience and will participate in a 3 - 3 year training program. 

Candidates hired as Apprentice Lineman who have 4 years or more of being a certified Lineman may be evaluated, and based on experience, background, and competency, may be placed in a 12- month accelerated training program. 

This position is a physically demanding position, works four, ten-hour days and requires overnight and out-of-town stays during the week near the construction site.  Depending on work location, you could be away from home as many as 200 nights per year.  This is cumulative, not consecutive nights.

Job Requirements

Education Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent

Experience Requirements:

  • It is required candidates have prior experience in the following:
    • 1 year or more as Journeyman Lineman experience
  • It is a plus for candidates to have experience in the following:
    • Transmission Lineman on voltages from 46kV TO 500kV 
    • Distribution Lineman experience

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Candidates must have:

  • A basic mechanical and electrical aptitude or background
  • A basic knowledge of hand tools
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Ability to take instruction, direction and translate those into actions
  • Ability to perform physically demanding activities while working outside in all weather conditions

It is preferred candidates have prior experience with:

  • Construction machinery such as skid steers, excavators, back hoes, cranes or heavy load rigging and lifting
  • Transmission Line Construction equipment and installation work to include installing, maintaining, and retiring of transmission lines on voltages from 46kV to 500kV construction skills

It is a plus for candidates to:

  • Be self-motivated
  • Take personal ownership of projects and assignments
  • Have previously demonstrated the ability to successfully work in a team environment
  • Have good communication skills

Other Requirements

1. Driver's License and Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

2. Pre-Employment Testing

To be considered for an interview, candidates must pass:

3. Interview

  • If invited to an interview, candidates will be required to travel to a designated location in Georgia (most likely the Atlanta area).  Candidates will not be paid for time or travel to complete these pre-employment tests and interview.

4. Prior To Employment

  • Pass a Post Offer Evaluation Test 
  • Prior to employment, a thorough background check and DOT drug screen will be conducted (after a job offer is extended).
  • You must successfully meet requirements for a Pre-Employment (DOT) physical exam approved by our company physician and Worker's Compensation Medical Questionnaire.  
  • Any offer of employment is contingent upon the applicant successfully completing all required fitness assessments.

5. Weight Restriction

  • Because of the nature of our work and weight restrictions on our equipment a candidate must currently weigh and maintain their body weight at or below 300 pounds fully dressed including steel-toed work boots and hardhat.

6. Travel and Working Conditions

  • All construction jobs require extended overnight stays and travel throughout the state of Georgia.  You could be away from home as many as 200 nights per year.  This is cumulative, not consecutive. 
  • Candidates must be able to frequently work in extreme weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, snow and ice.

Additional Information

Pay

  • This is a position covered by a collective bargaining agreement between Georgia Power Company and IBEW Local 84.  Union membership is optional. Current starting pay is $6458 per month / $37.26 per hour and is not negotiable.

Training And Development

  •  Transmission Construction employees will undergo an extensive training program, including classroom and on-the-job training.  The training program lasts approximately 3 to 3 years.  
  • Upon successful completion of the training, the employee is eligible to bid on Lineman positions as they become available.
