What does a line editor do?

A Line Editor reviews written content to improve clarity, flow, and style while ensuring grammatical accuracy. They focus on sentence structure, word choice, and readability rather than broad content or structural changes. Line Editors work closely with writers to refine tone and consistency. Their goal is to enhance the text without altering the author's voice. This role is common in publishing, journalism, and content creation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a line editor?

To thrive as a Line Editor, you need exceptional grammar, punctuation, and syntax expertise, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with style guides (such as AP, Chicago, or MLA) and editing tools like Microsoft Word's Track Changes or Adobe Acrobat is highly beneficial. Attention to detail, strong communication, and the ability to provide constructive feedback are key soft skills for this position. These skills help ensure high-quality, polished content that meets both editorial standards and client expectations.

What are some typical challenges a line editor might face in their daily work?

Line Editors often juggle multiple deadlines and projects, requiring strong time management and the ability to quickly adapt to varying writing styles or tones. Maintaining consistency while respecting each author's unique voice can be challenging, especially when editing work from multiple contributors. Additionally, navigating feedback from authors or managing conflicting editorial guidelines may require diplomacy and problem-solving skills. As part of a collaborative editorial team, you'll often work closely with copy editors, writers, and sometimes project managers to ensure that content meets the highest quality standards.

Job description

Senior Editor

Location: Costa Mesa (on-site)

Salary - $100,000 - $110,000

About the Role

We are partnering with a design and experiential agency to place a Senior Editor within their post-production team. This is not a seat-filler role. Our client produces premium brand work across video, live events, and integrated campaigns — and they need an editor who shapes stories, not just assembles cuts.

If you treat editing as a craft and hold yourself to a high standard across every frame, read on.

What You'll Do

  • Lead edits from concept through finish — owning narrative structure, pacing, tone, performance, and emotional arc
  • Contribute creative direction early in the process: concept hooks, story approaches, visual references
  • Collaborate with producers and PMs; take ownership of keeping projects moving
  • Execute finishing components including motion graphics (After Effects), typography, color (DaVinci Resolve or equivalent), music selection, sound design, and SFX polish
  • Partner with production teams and external vendors; hold the line on input quality (footage, design, audio)
  • Prep and QC deliverables for large-format LED screens and live event playback — non-standard resolutions, multi-screen formats, venue-specific specs
  • Present work to clients confidently and translate feedback into creative solutions without losing the integrity of the work

What We're Looking For

  • A reel/portfolio that demonstrates premium storytelling, visual taste, and craft
  • Sharp editorial instincts with a working understanding of the full post pipeline
  • Confidence owning creative decisions in front of both internal teams and clients
  • High ownership, collaborative mindset — you raise the bar without making it about you
  • Composure under pressure; solutions-oriented, not surprise-oriented

Required Skills

  • Advanced proficiency in Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro
  • Strong working knowledge of After Effects
  • Excellent visual sensibility — design, typography, layout
  • Solid color workflow fundamentals (DaVinci Resolve or comparable)
  • Audio fundamentals: dialogue cleanup, mix balance, music and SFX integration
  • Large-format deliverable experience: LED canvases, non-standard aspect ratios, safe zones, multi-output versions

Nice to Have

  • Experience pitching creative concepts to clients
  • Experience sourcing or leading shoots / working with production crews
  • Experience collaborating with CGI/3D teams
  • Live event post experience: ballrooms, conference stages, experiential installs, concerts

How to Apply

Please submit the following:

  • Your reel/portfolio link
  • A brief note on your role in 2–3 featured pieces (concept, edit, motion, color, sound, etc.)
  • danieln@noorstaffing.com

Benefits include medical, dental, vision, retirement, and PTO. Comprehensive benefits package available; see link for details.
