How much do lighting programmer jobs pay per hour?
What does a Lighting Programmer do?
A Lighting Programmer is responsible for programming and operating lighting control systems for live events, theater productions, concerts, and broadcasts. They work closely with Lighting Designers to translate creative visions into executable lighting cues using specialized software and consoles. Their role involves troubleshooting technical issues, ensuring smooth transitions, and sometimes live-operating the lighting during performances. Strong technical knowledge of lighting equipment and software, such as GrandMA or ETC Eos, is essential.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Lighting Programmer position, and why are they important?
A successful Lighting Programmer requires a solid background in lighting design, programming logic, and often a relevant degree or technical training in entertainment technology. Proficiency with industry-standard lighting consoles (such as MA Lighting grandMA or ETC Eos), DMX protocols, and show control systems is expected, along with certifications in these systems being advantageous. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills are vital, as Lighting Programmers frequently collaborate with designers, directors, and stage crews under tight deadlines. Mastery of these areas ensures seamless and visually impactful productions, efficient troubleshooting, and effective collaboration in high-pressure environments.
What are the typical responsibilities of a Lighting Programmer during a live production?
As a Lighting Programmer, you are responsible for setting up, programming, and operating complex lighting cues that align with the vision of the lighting designer and the overall production. This role often involves working closely with lighting designers, directors, and stage management to translate creative concepts into technical execution, attending rehearsals, and making on-the-fly adjustments during performances. You may also be tasked with troubleshooting equipment, maintaining show files, and supporting other crew members as needed. The role requires both technical precision and creative interpretation to ensure every cue enhances the audience’s experience. Expect a collaborative and sometimes fast-paced work environment, particularly during tech rehearsals and live events.

Job description
Who We're Looking For
Someone that has spent a decade (or more) behind a Hog console. You know the platform not just from the programmer's seat, but from the road - the festivals, the tours, and the real-world pressure of getting a rig show ready.
A unique individual that has pushed the Hog family to its limits, and you can clearly articulate what helps (and what hurts) in the workflows lighting programmers depend on. In this role, your insight isn't just "opinions" - it's structured, testable feedback that helps the team make better product decisions that directly affect Hog programmers around the world.
This role is for someone who has lived production and now wants to shape the software that runs it.
What You'll Do
- Perform hands-on verification of Hog software and console behavior across current platforms and configurations (e.g., Tour Hog, Flex Hog, Road Hog 4-21 and Full Boar 4), with attention to interoperability and real-world networked systems
- Evaluate new features with a critical programmer's eye: do they support practical workflows used by working lighting programmers and designers across touring, theatre, broadcast, and large-venue production? Do they hold up in a networked multi-console rig under show conditions?
- Partner directly with R&D and Product Management to identify edge cases, workflow gaps, and opportunities for improvement - your field experience is the asset
- Reproduce, document, and advocate for bug fixes with the context of someone who has felt those issues mid-show
- Engage with ETC's professional user community and bring broad practitioner-level insight to internal discussions, helping ensure feedback reflects multiple disciplines-not just a single personal workflow
- Help define quality benchmarks that reflect the demands of touring, broadcast, and large-venue production
What You Bring
- About 5 years, or more, of hands-on Hog console programming experience - Hog platform fluency is essential
- A track record in professional live production: touring, concert, theatrical, broadcast, or large-scale events
- Deep familiarity with networked console systems, show file architecture, and real-world troubleshooting
- Strong instincts for what "correct" looks and feels like from an operator's perspective
Comfort communicating technical findings clearly, in writing and in conversation with engineers - Working knowledge of DMX and IP-based lighting networks (e.g., Art-Net, SACN) - required
