What does a Lifeguard do?
  • Maintain constant surveillance of water and pool deck areas by 10-10 scanning
  • Assist swimmers in distress
  • Provide emergency medical assistance as trained to any person on the YMCA premise as
  • Necessary
  • Provide support to swim lessons and aquatic programs instructors
  • Take and record chemical readings set forth by branch
  • Know and operate pool equipment as required (i.e. lane lines, chair lift)
  • Enforce and educate members about aquatic rules and procedures set forth by branch
  • Provides exceptional customer service and fosters connections with members
  • Participating and satisfactory completion of in-service trainings

  • Must be at least 16 years old
  • Ability to obtain a criminal record clearance, if over 18 years of age
  • High School Diploma or equivalent; valid work permit required if a minor
  • Previous work experience preferred
  • Must be able to complete YMCA swim test and pass entry written test
  • Possess a basic-level Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) certification from one of the following organizations: Lifesaving Society National Lifeguard, YMCA, Ellis & Associates International Lifeguard Training Programโ„ข, Boy Scouts of America (BSA), StarGuard ELITE, United States Lifesaving Association (USLA). Ability to transition to Red Cross certification within 90 days
  • Complete required certifications within 60 days of hire
  • Complete all required Branch and Position specific trainings as required within two weeks of hire
