Job description

Description Provides swimming instruction in the instructional swimming program and oversees the recreational swimming program so that pool patrons are offered the maximum opportunity to participate in safe and healthy aquatic activities. Report ready for duty at least 15 minutes before assigned shift and be in a proper position when shift starts. 2.Be professional alert, courteous, and tactful. 3

Maintain an alert position while in the guard chair so he/she can observe signals from guards and note anything unusual in the water area he/she is guarding. 4. Refrain from unnecessary talk or visitation with the public.

If talk is necessary, do so while keeping assigned area under observation. 5. Make requests and issue orders in a courteous and determined manner.

If orders are not executed in full and at once, report the incident to the manager on duty. 6. Refer detailed inquiries to the manager on duty.

7. Clear all swimmers out of the water during an electrical storm, tornado warning or other emergency situations 8. Maintain discipline among the more active patrons so as to insure the safety and comfort of others.

9. Promptly and consistently enforce all facility rules. 10.

Keep the facility ?t for inspection at all times; litter picked up and maintains the lifeguard equipment and ?rst aid supplies in readiness. 11. Be aware of speci?c duties or responsibilities in the event of a major emergency.

12. Prepare daily lesson plans for assigned classes in the instructional swimming program. 13.

Instruct, assist and/or supervise classes in the instructional swimming program. 14. Perform other duties as assigned or directed by the pool manager, assistant managers, Aquatics Manager, Recreation Superintendent or Parks and Recreation Director.

15. The responsibilities listed above do not constitute every duty that may be performed by a lifeguard instructor. While on duty a lifeguard instructor may be expected to be asked to perform other duties and tasks which may or may not be directly related to the lifeguard or instructor function.

If such tasks are assigned, it is the responsibility of each lifeguard instructor to accomplish the assignment to the best of his/her ability. Typical Qualifications 1. High school graduate preferred 2.

Previous experience as a lifeguard preferred. 3. Previous experience as a swim instructor preferred.

4. Experience and/or training in aquatics and/or recreational activities is desirable. 5.

Current American Red Cross or equivalent certification in Water Safety Instructor, CPR, and First Aid and either Lifeguarding, Waterpark Lifeguard, or Waterfront Lifeguarding. 6. One [1] written recommendation for employment attesting to the applicant's ability to perform the duties of lifeguard and swim instructor; his/her dependability and character.

If possible a reference shall be obtained from a former employer, coach, teacher, or other person associated with an aquatics related course, program, or activity in which the applicant was involved. Other Qualifications 1. All lifeguard instructors must successfully complete a swimming and lifeguard proficiency test prior to the opening of the swimming season.

2. During each day of employment, all lifeguard instructors are expected to swim a minimum of 300 yards. 3.

All lifeguard instructors must attend and participate satisfactorily in all in-service activities. 4. All lifeguard instructors are expected to be available for fulltime duty during the entire swimming season.

5. Cleanliness and neatness are expected in all aspects of a lifeguard instructor's appearance and personal hygiene. 6.

Unnecessary jewelry, such as earrings, bracelets, pins, etc., should not be worn on duty. 7. Guard suits should be clean, neat, and in good repair

Evaluation: The pool manager and assistant managers will evaluate the performance of all lifeguard instructors annually. Salary, Hours, and Working Conditions: 1. The City of Upper Arlington will determine the hourly rate for lifeguard instructors annually.

2. Lifeguard instructors are permitted to work up to 40 hours per week. Hours worked in excess of 40 hours will be paid at the normal rate of pay with no provisions for overtime pay.

3. A maximum of seven [7] days unpaid leave are permitted. 4.

All lifeguard instructors must complete an annual drug and background screening.
