About Asphalt Greenย

Asphalt Green is a nonprofit organization that transforms lives and builds community through sports, fitness, and play for all.ย

Each year, Asphalt Green serves thousands of New Yorkers through sports, aquatics, fitness, camps, and community programs that promote health, personal growth, and lifelong participation in physical activity. Across three campuses and numerous community partnerships, Asphalt Green is committed to providing high-quality programs that are inclusive, accessible, and rooted in excellence.ย

Asphalt Green believes that access to movement, sport, and wellness can change lives. Our work helps young people develop confidence, resilience, leadership skills, and healthy habits that extend far beyond the playing field.ย

About the Roleย

Asphalt Green is seeking responsible, alert, and dedicated Lifeguards to join our Aquatics team.ย

This role is responsible for helping ensure the safety of all pool patrons by actively monitoring the pool, enforcing facility rules, responding quickly to emergencies, and supporting a safe, welcoming, and professional aquatics environment.ย

The ideal candidate is a strong swimmer with excellent observation, communication, and decision-making skills. Lifeguards must be able to remain calm under pressure, respond appropriately during emergencies, and work collaboratively with other lifeguards, aquatics staff, and facility team members.ย

This role may require the ability and willingness to work at either or both Asphalt Green locations: Upper East Side and Battery Park City.ย

Why This Role Mattersย

Lifeguards play a critical role in keeping Asphalt Greenโ€™s pools safe, organized, and welcoming for members, program participants, families, guests, and staff.ย

This role supports pool safety, emergency response, patron confidence, and the overall quality of the aquatics experience. By maintaining active surveillance, enforcing rules respectfully, and responding quickly when needed, Lifeguards help protect the health and safety of everyone using Asphalt Greenโ€™s aquatic facilities.ย

What Youโ€™ll Doย

Pool Safety and Surveillance

  • Maintain constant surveillance of the pool and surrounding areas to help ensure patron safety.ย

  • Monitor swimmers, pool activity, and facility conditions throughout assigned shifts.ย

  • Identify unsafe behavior, risks, or concerns and respond quickly.ย

  • Enforce facility rules to help prevent accidents and maintain a safe environment.ย

  • Give clear and respectful instructions to patrons when rules or safety expectations need to be reinforced.ย

  • Stay alert, focused, and prepared while on duty.ย

Emergency Response and First Aid

  • Respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies, including water rescues and first aid situations.ย

  • Administer CPR, AED, and other life-saving techniques as needed.ย

  • Remain calm and focused during emergency situations.ย

  • Communicate clearly during emergencies with patrons, staff, and management.ย

  • Follow Asphalt Greenโ€™s emergency procedures and aquatics safety protocols.ย

  • Report incidents, safety concerns, and equipment issues according to department procedures.ย

Patron Support and Customer Service

  • Assist patrons with questions and provide excellent customer service.ย

  • Communicate professionally with swimmers, members, guests, program participants, families, staff, and management.ย

  • Help create a welcoming and safe environment for all pool users.ย

  • Enforce rules respectfully and consistently.ย

  • Support a positive experience for patrons while maintaining safety as the top priority.ย

Teamwork and Facility Support

  • Work collaboratively with fellow lifeguards, aquatics staff, facility staff, and management.ย

  • Perform routine inspections of lifeguard equipment and report any issues.ย

  • Support pool readiness and safety checks as assigned.ย

  • Attend required staff meetings, in-service trainings, and safety training sessions.ย

  • Follow department standards, procedures, and expectations.ย

  • Support a clean, organized, and professional aquatics environment.ย

What Success Looks Likeย

Success in this role means the pool environment is safe, well-monitored, and professionally supported.ย

A successful Lifeguard will:ย

  • Maintain current certifications and participate in required trainings.ย

  • Work well with fellow lifeguards and aquatics staff.ย

  • Provide helpful and professional customer service.ย

Who Youโ€™ll Work Withย

The Lifeguard works closely with Aquatics leadership, fellow lifeguards, swim instructors, coaches, facility staff, members, guests, families, and program participants.ย
