Life Science information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a life science role, and why are they important?

The qualifications to get a job in a life sciences field typically include a bachelor’s degree and specific skills related to your duties. In college, you should study or major in biology, ecology, chemistry, or a closely related field. It is also important to get experience in laboratory and research settings, either through campus jobs or summer internships in the field. Advanced roles require a master’s degree, M.D., or Ph.D. Important skills include technical knowledge, such as how to design experiments, advanced computer literacy, and knowledge of safety protocols. Being a team player and having good interpersonal communication is essential.

What are some typical interdisciplinary collaborations that professionals in life science roles can expect, and how do these collaborations impact project outcomes?

Professionals in Life Science roles frequently collaborate with experts from fields such as bioinformatics, chemistry, engineering, and clinical research. These interdisciplinary teams are essential for driving innovation, as they combine diverse skill sets to tackle complex biological questions or develop new technologies. Effective collaboration often involves regular meetings, shared project management tools, and clear communication to ensure alignment on goals and timelines. Being open to learning from colleagues in other disciplines greatly enhances both individual and project success, and can open doors to new career pathways within the life sciences.

Job description

Bring more to life.

Are you ready to accelerate your potential and make a real difference within life sciences, diagnostics and biotechnology?

At Leica Microsystems, one of Danaher's 15+ operating companies, our work saves lives-and we're all united by a shared commitment to innovate for tangible impact.

You'll thrive in a culture of belonging where you and your unique viewpoint matter. And by harnessing Danaher's system of continuous improvement, you help turn ideas into impact - innovating at the speed of life.

Shape the Future with Us!

At Leica Microsystems, we have been shaping the future for over 175 years with groundbreaking optical and digital solutions. With a culture rooted in customer focus, innovation, and teamwork, we lead the market in microscopy, imaging, and analysis - empowering our customers to build a better, healthier world.

Leica is strengthening its focus on Biopharma as a strategic growth segment within Life Science Research. This role is critical to shaping how we define markets, build pipeline, and scale repeatable commercial success across discovery, translational, and early development workflows.

Here, you will work on meaningful, high-impact initiatives alongside cross-functional teams - helping translate emerging scientific capabilities into scalable commercial opportunities that advance discovery, translational research, and next-generation biological insight.

Learn about the Danaher Business System, which makes everything possible.

As a Market Development Manager - Spatial Biology, you will act as a subject-matter leader and strategic market development partner for Spatial Biology, multiplex imaging, and Omics-driven workflows. You will combine scientific credibility, commercial acumen, and customer insight to shape how Leica engages in high-growth, innovation-driven segments.

You will define and execute market development strategy by translating complex, emerging workflows into clear use cases, differentiated value propositions, and scalable commercial plays.

This role focuses on driving demand creation, shaping early-stage opportunities, establishing lighthouse accounts, and accelerating adoption of advanced workflows across target customer segments.

This role partners closely with Sales, Applications, Product Performance, Marketing, Customer Success, and Business Unit teams to enable effective field execution, strengthen Leica's market position, and influence portfolio and commercial strategy. Success will be measured by qualified pipeline creation, expansion of Spatial Biology and Omics use cases, adoption of new workflows, and establishment of referenceable customer outcomes.

This position reports to the Director of Market Development and is part of the North America Life Science Research commercial team, working remotely across the United States and Canada.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Define and execute Spatial Biology market development strategy across Biopharma, Academic, Translational, and Clinical Research segments, identifying priority applications, customer segments, and growth opportunities.
  • Translate complex Spatial Biology, multiplex imaging, and Omics workflows into scalable use cases and value propositions that drive awareness, adoption, and commercial growth.
  • Drive qualified pipeline creation and opportunity development by engaging strategic accounts, shaping customer workflows, and supporting progression from early interest to validated opportunities.
  • Act as the voice of the customer and market, engaging key opinion leaders, core facilities, and research collaborators to identify emerging trends, unmet needs, and workflow opportunities.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Sales, Applications, Marketing, Product, and Customer Success teams to support workflow adoption, enable field execution, influence portfolio strategy, and establish referenceable customer outcomes.

The essential requirements of the job include

  • PhD or advanced degree in life sciences (e.g., spatial biology, molecular biology, cancer biology, immunology, pathology, neuroscience, bioengineering, or related field) with a strong understanding of advanced research workflows.
  • Experience with Spatial Biology, multiplex imaging, Omics, or advanced imaging technologies, including the ability to engage credibly with scientific stakeholders and key opinion leaders.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex scientific concepts into practical use cases, value propositions, and strategies that drive technology adoption and customer engagement.
  • Strong commercial and analytical acumen, with experience assessing market opportunities, defining growth strategies, and contributing to pipeline development.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and influencing skills, with a proven ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary scientific and commercial teams.

Travel, Motor Vehicle Record & Physical/Environment Requirements:

  • Ability to travel overnight 30-40%, within territory and to support tradeshows as needed
  • Must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record

It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:

  • Spatial Biology, multiplex imaging, digital pathology, image analysis, proteomics, transcriptomics, or multi-omics workflows.
  • Translational research, biomarker discovery, oncology research, drug discovery, or clinical research environments.
  • Customer-facing roles such as field applications, scientific support, market development, technical sales, consulting, or workflow enablement.
  • Driving adoption of new technologies or emerging scientific workflows, including development of lighthouse accounts, reference sites, or thought-leader partnerships.
