What is the average salary of a LiDAR engineer?

The average salary of a Lidar Engineer in the United States typically ranges from $80,000 to $120,000 per year, depending on experience, location, and the industry they work in. More experienced Lidar Engineers or those with advanced degrees and specialized skills can earn upwards of $130,000 annually. Salaries may also be higher in sectors like autonomous vehicles, aerospace, and defense. Benefits and bonuses can further increase total compensation.

What factors can influence the salary range for a LiDAR engineer?

Several factors can impact the salary range for a LiDAR Engineer, including years of experience, level of education, and specific technical skills such as proficiency with point cloud processing, sensor integration, or geospatial analysis. The industry sector—such as autonomous vehicles, surveying, or environmental monitoring—can also affect compensation, as can the size and location of the employer. Additionally, demonstrated expertise in handling large datasets or developing custom LiDAR solutions may lead to higher salary offers and advancement opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a LiDAR engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lidar Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering, physics, or computer science, along with experience in lidar technology and sensor integration. Familiarity with CAD software, simulation tools, and programming languages like Python or C++, as well as knowledge of industry standards, is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating on complex projects and troubleshooting technical issues. These skills and qualities are vital to ensure accurate data acquisition, system reliability, and successful deployment of lidar solutions in real-world applications.

What is the difference between Lidar Engineer Salary vs Photogrammetrist Salary?

AspectLidar Engineer SalaryPhotogrammetrist Salary
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Engineering, Geomatics, or related field; GIS certificationsBachelor's in Geomatics, Geography, or related; GIS certifications
Work EnvironmentTechnology firms, surveying companies, autonomous vehicle industryMapping agencies, surveying firms, environmental consulting
Industry UsageAutonomous vehicles, robotics, infrastructure mappingTopographic mapping, land surveying, environmental studies

Both roles require expertise in geospatial data, GIS, and surveying techniques. While Lidar Engineers focus on laser scanning technology for 3D mapping, Photogrammetrists primarily use aerial imagery for mapping. Salaries vary based on experience and industry, but both are vital in geospatial fields.

What does a lidar engineer do?

A lidar engineer designs, develops, and tests lidar systems used for 3D mapping, autonomous vehicles, and environmental sensing. They work with sensors, data processing algorithms, and software tools to improve accuracy and performance, often requiring knowledge of electronics, programming, and signal processing.

Job Description
About us:
Aeva’s mission is to bring the next wave of perception to a broad range of applications from automated driving to industrial robotics, consumer electronics, consumer health, security, and beyond. Aeva is transforming autonomy with its groundbreaking sensing and perception technology that integrates all key LiDAR components onto a silicon photonics chip in a compact module. Aeva 4D LiDAR sensors uniquely detect instant velocity in addition to 3D position, allowing autonomous devices like vehicles and robots to make more intelligent and safe decisions.
Role Overview:
Aeva is seeking to hire a talented and motivated Sr/Staff Hardware Engineer to join our EE HW team. The EE HW team owns the design, build and bring up of Aeva’s mixed-signal PCBs. As a Hardware Engineer, you may be responsible to develop a System Architecture of our LiDAR system based on product requirements. You will be working closely with all EE engineers to define the individual PCBs, their function, and interconnections.
What you’ll be doing:
  • Break down product requirements into an architecture and EE PCB designs and their interconnections
  • Work closely with Electrical Engineers as well as cross-functional engineering and product teams to review their designs in terms of function and layout placement
  • Optimize architecture to reduce HW and SW complexity as well as optimize for cost and power consumption
  • Direct ownership of PCBs and sub-systems of a LiDAR from schematic design through layout, fabrication and bringup
What you have:
  • BS, Masters or PH.D. degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
  • 6+ years experience in HW design from architecture to implementation, prototyping and bringup all the way to high volume production
  • Deep understanding of HW components, their interfaces and SW controls
  • Good understanding of high speed designs with a variety of communication protocols (I2C, SPI, UART, Ethernet, PCIE etc)
  • Demonstrated experience and technical leadership in data acquisition subsystems including high-speed ADCs, high-precision analog sense paths and high-speed serial interfaces
  • Demonstrated experience utilizing commercial SI/PI software tools
  • Released several complex, multi-layer PCB designs into high volume production
  • Be an active team member working closely with other EE engineers and other groups
  • Ability to technically lead a small team of HW engineers is a plus
  • Experience in motion control systems, design and theory is a plus
  • A big plus if you have experience in LiDAR design or automotive product development
The salary range for Mountainview, CA will be $154,900 - $209,600 per year.
Salary pay ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, the successful candidate’s starting base pay will be determined based on factors including job-related skills, experience, certifications, qualifications, relevant education or training, and market conditions.
