What is a licensed practical nurse?

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) are healthcare professionals who provide basic nursing care under the supervision of registered nurses (RNs) and doctors. Their duties typically include monitoring patients’ health, administering medications, assisting with daily activities, and maintaining patient records. LPNs work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and home healthcare. To become an LPN, individuals must complete a state-approved educational program and pass the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).

What does a licensed practical nurse do?

As a Licensed Practical Nurse or LPN, you’ll provide basic hands-on patient care. Your duties and responsibilities will likely include monitoring your patients’ vital signs, changing dressings, administering injections, providing food and medication, and informing your medical team about patient requests or changes in condition. You might also be asked to help with diagnostic tests and procedures. Your career can take place in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, doctors’ offices, nursing homes, correctional institutions, rehabilitation centers, home healthcare environments, and military bases. The Licensed Practical Nurse position is considered an entry-level nursing career. You’ll generally report to Physicians or Registered Nurses.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a licensed practical nurse, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Licensed Practical Nurse, you need a solid understanding of basic nursing care, patient monitoring, and medical procedures, typically supported by completion of an accredited LPN program and state licensure. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), vital sign monitoring equipment, and medication administration systems is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and the ability to remain calm under pressure are critical soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure effective patient care, safety, and seamless collaboration with healthcare teams in diverse settings.

What are some common challenges licensed practical nurses face when working in a fast-paced healthcare environment?

Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) often work in settings where patient needs can change rapidly, such as hospitals or long-term care facilities. Common challenges include managing multiple patients with varying levels of care, prioritizing tasks efficiently, and responding quickly to emergencies. LPNs must also communicate effectively with registered nurses, physicians, and patients’ families to ensure coordinated care. Developing strong organizational and time-management skills can help LPNs navigate these challenges and provide high-quality patient care.
