The Library Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the school's library media center by fostering a welcoming, organized, and resource-rich environment for students and staff. Working under the guidance of the Library and Media Specialist and Building Principal, this position assists students with research and book selection, manages daily circulation and cataloging operations, and supports educational and behavioral goals to promote literacy, equitable access, and academic achievement across the school community. This commitment aligns with Framingham Public Schools' high expectations for achievement, equal access to culturally responsive, quality instruction, academic proficiency for all students, and a sense of belonging for all subgroups within our schools.
Framingham Public Schools (FPS) is committed to excellence for all students and to creating a workforce that reflects our community's rich racial, linguistic, and cultural diversity. Guided by our mission to empower free-thinking, responsible citizens, we value inclusion, equity, and cultural responsiveness in all we do. FPS strives to provide a safe and welcoming environment where every student and staff member can thrive. We actively seek educators and staff who are committed to antiracism, social justice, and civic engagement. We strongly encourage applications from individuals with disabilities and from members of historically underrepresented groups.
Framingham Public Schools is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to building a culturally responsive, antiracist, and inclusive community where all individuals are valued, respected, and supported to thrive.
Framingham, Massachusetts, is a vibrant and diverse suburban community located 20 miles west of Boston, serving as a major hub in the MetroWest area. It successfully blends urban convenience with the comfort of New England neighborhoods, characterized by cultural diversity and a strong community spirit.
A key asset is the Framingham Public School system, which is committed to equity, inclusion, and student success across its nine elementary schools, three middle schools, and Framingham High School. The district is recognized for its dual language programs, comprehensive special education services, and dedication to serving a diverse student population, preparing all learners for college and careers.
Framingham is also home to Framingham State University and offers abundant outdoor opportunities, including Cushing Memorial Park and Callahan State Park. With its blend of educational resources, accessibility, and dynamic community life, Framingham is a welcoming place to live and grow.
Associate (or higher) degree, or at least two years of post-secondary education that is equivalent to at least 48 credit hours from an accredited higher education institution (otherwise must pass the Parapro Test).
Previous experience in a school, academic, or public library setting is preferred. Familiarity or experience with library automation software (such as Destiny) is highly desirable. Experience working with children or K-12 students in educational or recreational environments. Additional specialized training or coursework in library science, child development, education, or a related field is desirable.
Ability to assist in delivering Tier 1 and Tier 2 instructional and reading interventions to meet the diverse needs of students, including those with IEPs, 504 plans, and English Language Learners. Ability to utilize library media usage data and assessment insights to support student growth, guide resource selection, and assist teachers with curriculum materials. Experience in supporting SEL frameworks within daily library routines to foster a safe, inclusive, and welcoming library culture. Knowledge of evidence-based literacy practices to support students in mastering core concepts, research techniques, and grade-level proficiency. Ability to utilize restorative approaches and positive behavioral interventions to maintain an orderly library environment and resolve peer conflicts constructively. Skill in aligning library media resources and support with Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and district instructional goals. Proficiency in utilizing instructional and library technology (Destiny cataloging system, Google Workspace for Education, interactive displays, and digital databases) to enhance student engagement and accessibility. Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams (library staff, classroom teachers, special education, and ESL staff) to support student success and access to resources. Demonstrated cultural proficiency and competence in fostering an equitable, inclusive, and culturally responsive environment for all staff, students, and families. Ability to maintain regular, predictable, and punctual attendance; exhibit professionalism, patience, and composure when responding to high-stakes or unpredictable student situations.
Collaborate with classroom teachers and the Library Media Specialist to assist in supporting learning experiences that incorporate inquiry, information literacy, and critical thinking. Promote a love of reading and lifelong learning through collection care, book displays, and student engagement. Assist students in applying search techniques, including online engines, specialized databases, and catalog searching. Guide students to be ethical users of information and responsible digital citizens. Utilize instructional technology to assist with student learning and encourage students in acquiring new knowledge. Support school-based decision-making teams and library programming goals as appropriate. Advocate for the Library Media Center (LMC) through positive public relations and assisting with reports on student usage and engagement. Support the alignment of LMC routines with school, district, and state standards to ensure excellence. Assist teachers and administrators in navigating digital library tools and media systems. Stay informed on current educational and library practices through ongoing professional learning. Assist staff with familiarization of digital library tools and research resources. Participate in evaluating and implementing new library methods and digital tools that advance library and technology goals. Foster a creative, flexible environment that establishes the LMC as a welcoming, essential part of the learning community. Support resource sharing and interlibrary access to expand materials available to students and staff. Help maintain print, digital, and technological resources that support the curriculum and reflect the multicultural diversity of the school community. Manage daily circulation operations (checking materials in/out, managing overdue notices, and processing lost items) and assist with ordering, inventory, and supply tracking. Maintain organized classification, shelving, and cataloging practices for library books and media metadata. Promote copyright awareness, fair use principles, and the ethical use of intellectual property among students. Assist with guiding volunteers and student helpers within the library media center as assigned. Commit to ongoing professional development, staying current with evidence-based practices and antiracist pedagogical frameworks.
