Job description


The Van Wagenen Library is searching for a Library Assistant 2 to work afternoon/evening shifts during the week, with some weekend hours. The selected candidate will be responsible for:
  • Processing requested items in Alma including checking possible doubles in SUNY system and providing our administrative assistant with the PO Lines for invoicing purposes.
  • Receiving newly delivered items (mainly journals/periodicals) including checking and possibly correcting OCLC records and holdings, managing loan type and duration, recording item cost, and attaching a barcode.
  • Processing items for library shelves by stamping received date for future inventory purposes, applying protective covering for book jackets, applying labels, adding security case to visual materials, and other physical processing tasks as needed.
  • Recording monthly acquisitions statistics.
  • Maintaining new materials shelves by rotating newly received items as they come, adjusting items from the temporary 'New Book' location to the permanent 'Main Collection' location in Alma, and physically moving them to the upstairs shelves.
  • Processing new serials daily by entering newest issue in Alma's title record, stamping with the Van Wagenen address, adding security measures to those that require it, shelving on current issues display, and moving the last issue to the collection in the stacks.
  • Repairing items in the collection to extend their shelf life when possible, referring to Cataloging/Acquisitions Librarian if the item needs to be withdrawn or replaced.
  • Withdrawing items as necessary in Alma with proper notes to indicate reason.
  • Removing periodicals yearly from bound periodical shelves as holding limit is reached.
  • Withdrawing and preparing McNaughton book lease returns for shipping.
  • Entering accepted donations into Excel sheet and create 'Gift' PO Line to be received into library collection.
  • Processing interlibrary loan requests using Alma and ILLiad according to both national standards and local policies.
  • Scanning items on shelves to check against inventory record yearly.
  • Customer service including item check outs and returns, changing due dates as necessary or marking item as lost if needed, processing payments for lost or damaged items, and directing informational questions to the librarian on duty.
  • Assisting in the training of student workers in library procedures including check outs and returns, LOC classification system, shelf checks, and item placement in the equipment room.
  • Supervising student workers including maintaining proper work scheduling and customer service etiquette.
  • Overseeing building operations in the evening and during weekend hours.
  • Recording customer questions and requests along with responses for library usage purposes.
Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications
Reachable on the Library Assistant 2 Civil Service List or eligible for transfer or reinstatement into the Library Assistant 2 title.

  • This is an SG-14 position with a salary of $56,506 - $68,630
  • This is a full-time, contingent permanent appointment.
  • The schedule is Sunday - Thursday 1-9 pm.
