What is a library IT professional?

Library IT professionals are specialists who manage and support the technology systems within libraries. They handle tasks such as maintaining library databases, troubleshooting technical issues, implementing digital resources, and ensuring data security. Their work enables library staff and patrons to access and use digital catalogues, e-books, online journals, and other electronic services efficiently. Library IT roles often require knowledge of both information technology and library science to bridge the gap between traditional library services and modern digital infrastructure.

How does a library IT professional typically collaborate with librarians and other staff to support library services?

Library IT professionals play a crucial role in maintaining and enhancing the technology infrastructure that supports library operations. They often work closely with librarians to identify digital resource needs, troubleshoot technical issues, and implement new library management systems or digital catalogues. Collaboration may also involve training staff on new software or digital tools and ensuring that both public and staff-facing technologies are secure and accessible. This teamwork ensures that the library remains a user-friendly, technologically up-to-date environment for patrons and employees alike.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a library IT specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Library IT Specialist, you need strong knowledge of information technology, library systems, and a relevant degree or certification in IT or library science. Familiarity with integrated library systems (ILS), digital resource platforms, and troubleshooting hardware and software issues is essential. Excellent problem-solving skills, communication abilities, and a customer-service mindset set you apart in this role. These skills are crucial to ensure seamless access to digital resources, maintain library technology, and support both staff and patrons effectively.

Mission: To connect our communities to a world of possibilities.

Vision: To be a trusted and valued resource to everyone in our communities.

Core Values: Community, Inclusivity, Trustworthiness, Accountability, and Service

Become a Part of a Community:

In Garfield County, Colorado you'll enjoy both rugged alpine vistas and high desert Rocky Mountains. It is home to the world's largest mineral hot springs pool, vast wilderness, and famous hiking trails like Hanging Lake, a designated National Natural Landmark. You're only about an hour's drive from world-class skiing at Aspen and Vail, and most of the District's towns are located on I-70 with easy access to larger population centers.

Overview of key responsibilities:

This position is responsible for creating, planning, and implementing a variety of youth services programs, performing community outreach, and collaborating with the Branch Manager to offer robust services for children and teens aged 0 to 18. The role includes developing and delivering engaging events and classes such as storytime, STEAM programs, book clubs, and artistic activities; building relationships with schools, community organizations, educators, and families through outreach and partnerships; and educating caregivers about early literacy practices and child development. Collaboration is key; the position involves contributing to District-wide events, attending meetings, and providing leadership and organizational support.

Additional responsibilities include selecting books, materials, and activities for youth programs, coordinating schedules with presenters and performers, evaluating program effectiveness, and monitoring and maintaining the branch's youth collection to reflect community needs. Duties also encompass customer service at the Circulation Desk, assisting patrons of all ages with general library services, account questions, and computer use, as well as addressing reference inquiries and offering readers' advisory services.

The role involves evaluating programs to ensure they meet the developmental needs of targeted groups, creating informative exhibits and displays, and sharing program information with other branches. Other tasks include participating in ongoing training and actively participating on the District's Youth Services Coordinator team and special projects. The Youth Services Coordinator offers guidance and education to staff and caregivers in early literacy, childhood development, and reader's advisory for youth.

The position ensures patron compliance with library policies, serves as Person in Charge in the absence of branch management, and takes on additional duties as assigned, while maintaining a commitment to contributing to a positive work environment, excellent customer service, and community engagement.

Who We're Looking For:

The ideal candidate is someone who:

  • Is passionate about early literacy and youth development.
  • Understands the developmental needs of children and tweens and can create engaging, age-appropriate experiences.
  • Thrives in a collaborative environment and genuinely enjoys working as part of a team.
  • Builds positive relationships with coworkers, community partners, families, and youth.
  • Values communication, flexibility, and a customer-service mindset.
  • Contributes to a positive workplace culture by supporting colleagues, sharing ideas, and working toward common goals.
  • Demonstrates initiative while also recognizing that the best youth services programs are built through partnership and collaboration.
