What is a library intern?

Library interns are students or recent graduates who work in libraries to gain practical experience in library science and related fields. They assist with various tasks such as cataloging materials, organizing collections, helping patrons, and supporting library programs. Internships provide hands-on training and exposure to the daily operations of a library, which can be valuable for those considering a career in librarianship. The specific duties and learning opportunities can vary depending on the library's size and focus.

What types of projects and responsibilities can a library intern expect during their internship?

Library Interns often assist with a variety of tasks, such as cataloging new materials, organizing library collections, and helping patrons with research or technology needs. You may also support event planning, community outreach, or digital archiving projects, depending on the library’s focus and size. Interns typically work closely with librarians and library assistants, offering a valuable opportunity to learn about library operations, customer service, and information management. These experiences help interns develop practical skills and can open doors to future roles within library science or related fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a library intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Library Intern, you need a basic understanding of library organization, research skills, and enrollment in or completion of a library science or related program. • Review the current Power BI report and recommend ways to improve QorusDocs reporting and data retrieval.
• Document practical notes, tips, and light training support materials that make content and tools easier for the team to use consistently.
• Participate in relevant team meetings, content reviews, and technology discussions to learn how proposal strategy, content quality, efficiency, and Unmatched Client Experience principles connect.

• Comfort with writing, editing, research, and proofreading, including the ability to summarize information clearly and accurately.
• Comfortable learning new technology and looking for practical ways that tools can improve day-to-day work.
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
• Interest in AI tools, prompt writing, automation, content management systems, SharePoint, or proposal automation tools is helpful. Prior experience is welcome but not required.
• Willingness to learn and follow established guidelines for brand, quality, confidentiality, risk, legal, and approved content use.
• Curious and willing to ask questions, test ideas, and share observations that could help improve how the team works.
• Reliable work habits, good time management, and the ability to manage assigned tasks within a part-time schedule.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Current enrollment in a college or university program is preferred. Relevant areas of interest may include marketing, communications, English, business, information systems, knowledge management, library science, data management, or a related field.

Learning Opportunities:
Through this internship, the individual will gain practical exposure to proposal development, content strategy, knowledge management, QorusDocs, AI-assisted workstreams, and business development support in a professional services environment.
