Job description

The Library Specialist (9 Month) maintains safety and security in the Richard J. Daley IDEA Commons during overnight hours, assists patrons in the IDEA Commons, and performs general office support services and special projects as needed. This position enforces conduct policies to maintain a scholarly environment in the Library.
Work Hours/Schedule: Monday - Thursday for 9 months during fall and spring semesters. Library hours of operation are reduced during Spring Break, summer, and intersession periods. Monday 10:00pm-7:30am (9 hrs); Tuesday - Thursday 9:30pm-7:30am (9.5 hrs)

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Maintains safety and security independently in the Richard J. Daley IDEA Commons during overnight hours:
  • Enforces the Library's Code of Conduct and policies for use of the IDEA Commons
  • Conducts hourly headcounts and periodic inspections to assure the safety of patrons in the IDEA Commons
  • Monitors access to the IDEA Commons to ensure that only UIC-affiliated patrons are in the space during designated times
  • Monitors the activities of contracted security officers on library patrol
  • Reports incidents and issues
  • Assists patrons in the IDEA Commons:
  • Circulates headphones, chargers, and other equipment
  • Answers basic reference questions and performs search queries
  • Refers patrons to appropriate resources and services
  • Assists with basic technology
  • Provides other general information services
  • Assists with closing the building to prepare for overnight shift.
  • Collects and collates data and statistics for department.
  • Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.
  • Performs general clerical activities and office support duties.
