Job description

The Library Assistant I - Circulation position requires exemplary customer service skills and a commitment to outstanding service.

The Chesapeake Public Library ( CPL ) is seeking individuals with a heart for the community who share our mission to build bridges to discovery through professionalism, collaboration, curiosity, communication, and solution-focused service to join our team as a Library Assistant I in Circulation.

The ideal candidate for a library position is someone with a commitment to service who possesses a growth mindset and is looking for a career focused on service to others.
Responsibilities of the Library Assistant I include:
  • Assist patrons in the library and on the phone with selecting and locating library materials and general library information.
  • Library Account Maintenance- Issue library cards to patrons, check library materials in and out.
  • Assist patrons with online resources, tablets and mobile devices; reader's advisory; and use of other library materials and equipment.
  • Operate, perform weekly maintenance, and troubleshoot Automated Material Handling ( AMH ) equipment.
  • Receive, inspect, sort, and process library materials.
  • Shelve materials, read shelves, weed, empty book drops, pull holds, and perform other tasks related to routine collection maintenance.
  • Instruct patrons on self-checkout equipment and basic computer needs, including printing and faxing.
  • Handle various forms of tender and cash registers to process fees, fines, sales, and donations.
  • Collect daily statistics.
  • Perform basic computer troubleshooting, including entering help desk tickets, as needed.
  • Handle room reservations.
  • Work at any public service desk (Circulation, Adult Services, or Youth and Family Services).
  • Attend training to stay abreast of technology, programs, databases, services, and procedures.
  • Use excellent time management and multi-tasking skills.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
VOCATIONAL / EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT :
Requires instruction that is sufficient for satisfactory job performance.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT :
In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of three months of related, full-time equivalent experience in public libraries or customer service-related industry or volunteerism equivalent to 6 months' part-time work experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFITCATIONS :
Requires a valid driver's license and driving record in compliance with City Driving Standards .
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS :
Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or city-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with automated circulation systems highly desired. Public library related experience desired and some knowledge of reconciling money.
