Job description

Media Program Assistant

Assists the school media specialist in establishing and operating an effective media program which supports the organizational goals of the school as stated in the School Improvement Plan. This position reports to the Principal or designee.

Staffs the circulation desk and manages circulation desk operations including: maintaining patron records; circulating books and equipment; shelving books; collecting lost book fines; printing and distributing overdue notices; assisting in scheduling of class visits; and answering the telephone.

Maintains the media collection including: processing new books; weeding damaged, old, and inaccurate materials; maintaining library shelves; inspecting books for damage; repairing damaged books; and assisting in selection of new materials.

Assists patrons including students, parents, faculty, and staff with: location of materials; book recommendations; accessing online materials; and assisting students with assignments and research. Supervises student use of the media center and use of technology.

Performs clerical tasks including: distributing reports and information to faculty and staff mailboxes; typing memos, letters, and documents; making copies; and preparing reports.

Assists with media program activities such as media collection inventory, equipment inventory, book fair, reading initiatives, and author visits.

Maintains an orderly, neat, and attractive atmosphere in the media center.

Assumes responsibility for operation of the media center and supervision of activities in the absence of the media specialist.

All other duties, as assigned and required, in order to perform the above services.

High school diploma or GED required. Associates degree preferred.

Minimum one (1) year training in library procedures and/or two (2) years of clerical experience preferred.

Makes recommendations or decisions which usually affect the media center.

One of the below requirements must be met:

  1. Hold an associate's degree or higher in any subject from a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution, or
  2. Have completed two (2) years of college coursework (sixty [60] semester hours) above the remedial level with a grade of "C" or better at a GaPSC-accepted accredited institution, or
  3. Have passed the GACE Paraprofessional Assessment and hold a minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent.

Light independent judgment is necessary. Decisions made on an as-needed basis to establish operation of the media center.

Requires regular, frequent communication with Media Specialist and school personnel.

Requires periodic communication with parents regarding materials checked out to students.

Applies, recommends and implements technology to improve the effectiveness of school operations.

NOTE: This is a Grade 16, 190-day position that pays starting at a Step 6 up to a Step 8 for experience.
