Hours: 29 hours per week I Schedule: Monday-Thursday 9:00AM-3:30PM; Friday 9:00AM-2:00PM, includes hr. unpaid lunch Supervisor: Director of Technical Services I Location: Martin Library I Department: Technical Services I Classification: Part-Time/Non-Exempt


The Library Assistant supports the Technical Services Department and branches of York County Libraries by processing and preparing materials for distribution, updating order records in the SPARK Integrated Library System, applying barcodes and spine labels, and completing physical processing tasks such as covering and taping materials. This position also prepares materials for delivery, monitors and orders supplies, and assists with special projects at other worksites as needed.

Must enjoy being a team player, providing quality customer service to library staff and working in an environment that requires changes in priorities due to shifting deadlines. This position requires someone with good communication skills, the ability to work with minimal supervision and a strong attention to detail. It is important that the candidate be reliable and comfortable working on a variety of projects.


Education & Experience Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma (or equivalent).
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with Integrated Library Systems (ILS), preferably SPARK is a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and accuracy in data entry.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work independently or as part of a team.


Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop local cataloging proficiency and a working knowledge of the Spark ILS.
  • Modifies Acquisitions records in the SPARK catalog to create active item records and completes end processing for all firm ordered and centrally ordered print materials for branch libraries. Prints and applies spine labels to centrally ordered items for member libraries.
  • Slips all items and prepares them for distribution via delivery.
  • Transports items to delivery area.
  • Monitors supplies and orders them as needed.
  • Assists within the Technical Services department as workflow demands.
  • Other duties as requested by the Director of Technical Services.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds from ground level to waist level and be able to bend, squat, and kneel occasionally throughout work shift.
  • Must be able to push a cart up to 80 pounds.
  • Must be able to stand and/or walk for up to four (4) hours at a time.
  • Required to perform simple grasping and fine manipulation tasks with both hands and requires acceptable corrected vision (in both eyes) and acceptable corrected hearing.
  • Depresses computer keyboard keys and use of mouse.
  • Pick up and holds and lays down handset of telephone
  • Must be able to reach, lift, and stretch throughout the workday.
  • Clear and comprehensive speech required to communicate adequately in performance of this job.
  • Must be able to sort items in alphabetical and numerical order and read labels and forms written in small print.
