Job description

The Town of Glastonbury is seeking a part-time Library Technical Assistant to provide to provide paraprofessional support at the Welles-Turner Memorial Library in their MakerSpace, known locally as the 2CF Studio.ย  This position will oversee the setup and coordination of the MakerSpace facility equipment, as well as work with Library professional staff to assist patrons with its instruction and use.ย  This position would be scheduled 6 hours per week and have the opportunity to fill in for others during the week. Must have availability to work days, nights and weekends.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under direct supervision of a Librarian, Incumbent performs a variety of specialized, skilled clerical and routine paraprofessional support duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. Checks library materials in and out and inspects for damage.
  2. Registers and issues library cards.
  3. Answers telephone, routes calls as appropriate, answers routine queries and refers patrons in need of professional assistance to librarians.
  4. Collects, records and reports fines and other funds received.
  5. Catalogs, and processes library materials.
  6. Maintains updated Library Catalog.
  7. Performs administrative support tasks, such as maintaining statistics, and maintaining supplies inventory.
  8. Provides technical guidance to and participates in the training of library assistants and pages.
  9. Prepares assistantsโ€™ and pagesโ€™ work schedules and assignments.

OTHER JOB DUTIES:

  1. Assists with special projects/programs as requested.
  2. Attends local/regional meetings that pertain to technical services.
  3. Performs other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE:

  • Familiarity with current library trends
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and the Internet
  • Ability to provide customer service by interacting positively with public and coworkers
  • Ability to learn and follow library policies and procedures
  • Ability to count change and handle money

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to sit for prolonged periods; some walking, standing, stooping, and carrying of light items such as papers, books or small parts, requiring the ability to push/pull/lift objects of up to twenty-five (25) pounds
  • Ability to perform manipulative skills which require hand-eye coordination such as keyboard skills
  • Ability to see objects closely as in reading and typing a document
  • Ability to hear normal sounds with background noise, distinguish voice patterns and communicate with speech as in using a telephone or communicating with others
  • Ability to attend to detail and concentrate for forty-five (45) minutes or more with frequent interruptions, remember multiple assignments given over long periods of time, and understand the theories behind several related concepts

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Two-year Library Technical Assistant (LTA) degree or any equivalent combination of training, education or experience.
  • Previous library experience and computer experience, desirable
