Job description

Description

Liberty Mutual is seeking an experienced claims professional to own a sophisticated book of Private Company and Not-For-Profit Directors & Officers (D&O) and Employment Practices Liability (EPL) claims. This is a role for a seasoned specialist - someone who can operate with minimal oversight, exercise sound independent judgment on complex coverage and liability questions, and manage claims with real financial and reputational stakes from first notice through resolution.  If you have advanced D&O and/or EPL claims experience, this is the job for you!

You'll bring deep technical expertise in Employment Practices Liability and/or Management Liability coverage,

a strong grasp of litigation strategy, and the confidence to make high-authority decisions on reserving, settlement, and case direction. This is an opportunity to work at the higher end of claim complexity and severity, partner directly with underwriting and senior counsel, and shape outcomes on claims that matter.

Location note: Candidates within a 50-mile radius of one of our Commercial claims offices (Westborough, MA; Boston, MA; Hoffman Estates, IL; Indianapolis, IN; Lake Oswego, OR; Las Vegas, NV; Chandler, AZ; Plano, TX; Suwanee, GA; or Weatogue, CT) will be expected to be in-office at least twice monthly. This requirement is subject to change.

What You'll Own

  • End-to-end management of a complex D&O and EPL claim portfolio - investigation, coverage analysis, and disposition on sophisticated, often novel, exposures
  • Independent reserve authority: setting and regularly reviewing indemnity and expense reserves for adequacy, with recommendations on claims exceeding your authority
  • Direction of the litigation process, including counsel selection, budget oversight, and strict adherence to litigation guidelines
  • Strategic participation in mediations and arbitrations within your settlement authority
  • Identification and escalation of claim trends, account issues, and policy language concerns to management and underwriting partners
  • Preparation of executive-level reports on high-exposure or high-visibility claims
  • Representation of Liberty Mutual in front of brokers, risk managers, and reinsurers as part of claims marketing efforts
  • Mentorship - informally guiding less experienced claims staff and contributing to best-practice development
  • Active participation in the claims audit process
Qualifications

What We're Looking For

  • Extensive experience (typically 7+ years) handling D&O and/or EPL claims, ideally including private company and not-for-profit exposures
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex litigation and work effectively with defense counsel
  • Strong analytical and negotiation skills, with a track record of sound judgment on high-authority claims
  • Active adjuster license(s), or ability to obtain and maintain as required
  • J.D. or equivalent claims/insurance credentials (e.g., CPCU, AIC) a plus, though not required
