Job description

The successful candidate for the Operations Supervisor for Rigging will supervise the daily activities of 10-15 Department 920 riggers. D920 plans, schedules, coordinates & accomplishes virtually all lifting & handling activities in support of manufacturing, assembly, outfitting & testing of submarine structures and components while maintaining safety, quality, cost, schedule and continuous improvement. D920 personnel operates all facility cranes (bridge, gantry, mobile, crawler, and cantilever), transporters, transfer car system, Traksporter and air pallets.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Attending Plan of the Day (POD) to assist with prioritizing the daily workload, assign and execute the work to meet company goals. The candidate will perform risk assessment of each task prior to job assignment in accordance with ODD-027 and provide oversite during execution of lifting and handling activities including  and technical guidance. The candidate’s responsibilities shall also include the following:

  • Ensure first time quality and compliance with Navy Crane Center standards, the EB Safety Manual, lifting & handling policies, procedures, and engineered drawings
  • Perform safety, forklift, and lifting and handling surveillances regularly and assist middle management with corrective actions to minimize negative trends
  • Minimize the department training delinquency and no show rate to meet company goals
  • Capture EBos delays and assist middle management with corrective actions to control cost
  • Complete Near Miss Reports and lower level crane/rigging accident reports for areas of responsibilities
  • Provide mentoring/counselling to subordinates that do not follow directions or policies and procedures
  • Develop and mentor subordinates that are capable of acting as substitute supervisors
  • Must have the ability to motivate, mentor and develop all subordinates to support business goals and needs
  • Must have the ability to drive team performance to support business demands such as required O.T. and extended hours when the business dictates

Additional responsibilities include assisting the D920 Area Superintendent with planning, scheduling, training, safety performance, equipment inspection & maintenance, development & implementation of process improvement projects, review of construction methods/sequencing and lifting and handling drawings.

Occasional travel may be required. The candidate will supervise other support trades (e.g. stage builders) where required.

This position is located at the Quonset Point facility in North Kingstown, RI.


Required:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Minimum of 1 year rigging or related experience 
  • Available to work all three shifts
  • Proficient with lifting and handling policies, procedures and drawings
  • Knowledge of basic safe work practices and have the ability to comprehend, follow and issue verbal and/or written instructions
  • Available to work extended work hours to support production schedules (including weekends, holidays and plant shutdowns) as business needs dictates
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance through the department of defense

Preferred:

  • Experience in shipbuilding 
  • Experience in Lifting and Handling
  • Minimum of 2 years lifting and handling experience in a construction or manufacturing environment
  • Working knowledge of ship systems and procedures pertaining to submarine construction
  • Supervisory experience
  • Military experience
  • Vocational, Technical and Community Colleges or Apprentice programs
  • MDU graduate
