What is a lettering artist?

Lettering artists are creative professionals who specialize in drawing and designing decorative letters and type by hand. They work on projects such as logos, signage, packaging, book covers, and custom invitations, often blending illustration and typography. Their skills involve not only artistic ability but also a deep understanding of letterforms, composition, and visual communication. Lettering artists may work freelance or as part of a design team, and their work is used to convey a brand’s personality or add a unique touch to visual materials.

What is the difference between Lettering Artist vs Calligrapher?

Industry UsageGraphic design, branding, advertisingWedding, event signage, art

While both Lettering Artists and Calligraphers focus on decorative writing, Lettering Artists typically work in graphic design and branding, creating stylized letterforms digitally or by hand for commercial projects. Calligraphers specialize in traditional, artistic handwriting for events or art pieces. The roles overlap in skills but differ in application and industry focus.

How do lettering artists typically collaborate with graphic designers and clients during a project?

Lettering Artists often work closely with graphic designers to ensure their hand-crafted letterforms integrate seamlessly into the overall visual design. Communication with clients is also key, as Lettering Artists need to understand brand guidelines, project objectives, and feedback to refine their work. Collaboration might involve sharing sketches, participating in creative briefings, and revising drafts based on team input. This process helps ensure that the final lettering aligns with the client's vision and the project's aesthetic goals.

What does a lettering artist do?

As a lettering artist, your responsibilities include hand lettering (i.e., drawing letters by hand) to form words in a creative manner that mirrors computer typography in graphic design. Lettering artists have excellent design and creative skills to produce letters with unique shapes and forms for individuals and businesses who use them for logos, products, and signs. Lettering artists also assist with creating lettering for advertisements and advertising materials, such as brochures and white papers. Your duties as a lettering artist depend on who you work with, which is usually clients with specific lettering needs for personal or business use.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lettering artist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lettering Artist, you need strong drawing skills, a keen eye for typography, and a solid understanding of design principles, often supported by a portfolio showcasing your work. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Illustrator, Procreate, and Photoshop is essential, and some artists pursue courses or certifications in graphic design. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help you interpret client briefs and deliver unique, high-quality lettering. These skills ensure your work stands out in a competitive market and meets the specific needs of clients and projects.

Whether you’ve worked in construction, carpentry, cabinetry, flooring, or other hands-on trades, your skills can translate into an exciting and creative new opportunity with Dollamur — the global leader in sports mats (wrestling, martial arts, UFC, gymnastics, and more!).

Position: Sports Mat Painter – 2nd Shift
Schedule: Monday–Thursday, 1:00 PM – 11:30 PM

Why You’ll Love This Job:

What You’ll Be Doing:
  • Painting logos, lettering, and artwork directly on large-scale mats (wrestling, judo, MMA).
  • Measuring, cutting, and preparing surfaces to exact specifications.
  • Working on your hands and knees to complete detailed paintwork.
  • Teaming up with skilled artists and craftsmen to complete custom mat orders.

Who We're Looking For:
  • Skilled Tradespeople – experience in construction, woodworking, flooring, or other physical trades is a major plus.
  • Detail-focused workers who can follow measurements and instructions precisely.
  • Comfortable with kneeling, lifting, bending, and using tools like tape measures and utility knives.

  • Ability to speak, read, and write English.
  • Willing to work overtime and some weekends when needed.

Work Environment:
