Job description

Punahou School's Extended Learning Programs are an important extension of a broad, deep, and balanced educational program. Student engagement in learning can be heightened by a rich extracurricular and co-curricular life, and our after school programs provide students with ample opportunities for exploration, experiencing, example and excellence/expertise.

The Music School collaborates to fulfill an important part of the Punahou School mission: to develop and enhance creativity and appreciation of the arts. The Music School is seeking passionate and experienced teachers, who are committed to excellence in teaching and learning. A Music School Teacher will:

  • Instruct private cello lessons
  • Assess students
  • Plan and organize resources for lessons
  • Select appropriate repertoire (sometimes in relation to assessments/examinations/competitions)
  • Adapt lesson resources and tailor teaching methods to the needs of the individual
  • Provide an effective, varied, and enjoyable range of activities to further students' musical and technical abilities
  • Set clear goals for student progress and self-assessment
  • Complete written feedback reports and assessments
  • Encourage students to perform in weekly recitals and studio recitals
  • Organize annual studio or inter-studio recitals
  • Communicate with parents and academic staff and network to maintain contacts
  • Teach with the use of technology when appropriate
  • Keep up-to-date knowledge of pedagogy research and resources
  • Be an active member in professional organizations
  • Be active in the music teaching community
  • Attend faculty meetings


Position Details:

  • Work Year: 10.5 Months
  • School Year: 2026-2027
  • Work Hours: Monday - Saturday, hours will vary based on scheduled lessons
  • Hourly Rate*: $52.80/Hour


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in music or combination of education and experience. Master's degree preferred.
  • Three (3) years of successful teaching experience in a private setting preferred.
  • Demonstrated performance and teaching skills.
  • An enthusiasm for music and an ability to inspire students' life-long love and learning of music.
  • A willingness to collaborate and learn together with fellow teaching colleagues.
  • A commitment to continual professional development.
  • Highly effective communication skills, both interpersonal and written communication.
