Job description

After-School Math Elementary/Middle School Tutor – WCUSD Campuses

Location: West Covina Unified School District campuses
Job Type: Part-time, limited-term
Pay: $21 per hour
Schedule: Monday–Friday, beginning as early as 1:00 p.m.

Sylvan Learning of West Covina is hiring up to 15 teachers and tutors for an upcoming after-school math intervention program at West Covina Unified School District campuses for elementary and middle school.

This is an in-person, school-site position designed for educators who want to make a meaningful impact without creating curriculum, writing lesson plans from scratch, grading papers, or taking work home. Sylvan provides the curriculum, lesson materials, manipulatives, training, and ongoing support.

What the Position Looks Like

Tutors will provide live, teacher-led math instruction to groups of up to eight students. Students will be grouped according to their instructional needs, and tutors will follow Sylvan’s structured Ace It! Math program.

Consistency is very important to our students and school partners. Once assigned, tutors are expected to remain with the same classroom and student groups for the full 12- or 24-week program.

Daily shifts will range from approximately 1.5 to 4 hours, depending on the campus schedule and number of groups assigned. We will make every effort to provide as many back-to-back instructional hours as possible based on each tutor’s availability. However, specific daily hours cannot be guaranteed.

Applicants with consistent availability on multiple afternoons will receive priority consideration.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver engaging, teacher-led math instruction to groups of up to eight students

  • Follow Sylvan’s provided curriculum and lesson structure

  • Model concepts clearly and adjust explanations and practice when students need additional support

  • Maintain a positive, organized, and encouraging classroom environment

  • Record attendance, skills taught, student proficiency, and brief session notes

  • Support STAR pre- and post-assessment sessions

  • Communicate student needs or concerns to the Sylvan site manager

  • Arrive prepared and on time for every assigned shift

  • Follow all Sylvan, district, and campus procedures

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or previous teaching or tutoring experience preferred

  • Experience working with elementary-age students strongly preferred

  • Comfortable teaching foundational and grade-level math skills

  • Able to manage and engage a group of up to eight students

  • Consistent availability for at least two afternoons per week, Monday through Friday

  • Three- or four-day availability is strongly preferred

  • Reliable transportation to the assigned WCUSD campus

  • Must successfully complete required background check, TB clearance, and onboarding requirements

  • Dependable, professional, patient, and passionate about helping students succeed

Schedule and Commitment
  • After-school hours only

  • Monday through Friday

  • Shifts may begin as early as 1:00 p.m.

  • Approximately 2 to 4 hours per scheduled day

  • Consistent weekly schedule once assigned

  • Program assignments will last either 12 or 24 weeks

  • Selected candidates must be available to complete onboarding promptly

  • We are seeking to fill up to 15 positions by September 15

What We Offer
  • $21 per hour for on-campus instruction

  • Paid training

  • Paid sick time

  • Curriculum, lesson plans, and teaching materials provided

  • Small groups of no more than eight students

  • Consistent students and weekly schedule

  • Support from an experienced Sylvan management team

  • The opportunity to make a visible difference for local students

Important Position Information

This is a limited-term position connected to a specific school-district program. Assignments are dependent on final district contracts, student enrollment, scheduling, and completion of all clearance requirements.

The initial assignment will last 12 or 24 weeks, depending on the school contract. Renewal is not guaranteed. After the school-site assignment ends, ongoing part-time opportunities at Sylvan Learning of West Covina may be available based on performance, availability, and center staffing needs, but continued employment is not guaranteed.

If you are an enthusiastic and dependable educator who enjoys helping students build their skills and confidence, we would love to hear from you. Applications are being reviewed immediately.
