What is a Lego developer?

A Lego Developer is responsible for designing, prototyping, and building models or interactive experiences using Lego bricks and digital tools. They may work for Lego itself, in theme parks, or in digital design roles, creating physical or virtual Lego-based products. Their job involves creativity, engineering skills, and sometimes programming for robotics or digital models.

To thrive as a Lego Developer, you need a solid background in design, engineering, or architecture, combined with proficiency in 3D modeling and an in-depth knowledge of LEGO parts and building techniques. Familiarity with digital design tools such as LEGO Digital Designer (LDD), BrickLink Studio, or similar CAD software is often required. Strong creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with teams are key soft skills. These competencies ensure that Lego Developers can produce engaging and structurally sound models while meeting client or project specifications.

What are some typical responsibilities of a Lego developer on a project team?

As a Lego Developer, your daily responsibilities often include conceptualizing and designing new Lego models or sets, creating detailed instructions, and ensuring the build meets both aesthetic and structural standards. You may also collaborate closely with product designers, engineers, and marketing teams to refine concepts and ensure feasibility for large-scale production. Troubleshooting technical issues, sourcing the right bricks, and conducting test builds to confirm stability are common tasks. This role demands both independent problem-solving and collaborative teamwork to bring imaginative ideas to life while adhering to brand guidelines and safety requirements.

Verkada

Job description

Who We Are
Verkada is transforming how organizations protect their people and places with an integrated, privacy-sensitive AI-powered platform that includes solutions for video security, access control, air quality sensors, alarms, intercoms, and visitor management.
We've got serious momentum in the market: more than 30,000 customers (including 100+ of the Fortune 500), a $5.8B valuation, more than $1 billion in annualized bookings, and backing from CapitalG, Sequoia Capital, General Catalyst, Felicis Ventures, Next47 and more. Physical AI is one of the most consequential technology shifts of our time, and Verkada is at the center of it.
You can look at all kinds of communities to see our platform's impact in the world. It's the retailer that uses our agentic AI to deter theft before it happens. The warehouse that uses AI-powered alerts to make sure its team is protected on the floor with proper PPE. The school that's alerted to a threat in real-time and triggers a lockdown in seconds, not minutes. We're rapidly scaling this impact: today, more than 2 million Verkada devices are deployed across 170+ countries.
About the Role
Verkada is the leading cloud-managed physical security platform, uniting hardware, software, and AI to deliver enterprise-scale security. As our ecosystem grows, our Mobile Core team is pivoting to a high-leverage Platform model.
The Mobile Core team provides the underlying systems, frameworks, and components used by product teams across the company to build high-performance mobile experiences. In this role, you will be a key technical contributor "Native Systems Layer"-ensuring that our mobile foundation is reliable, scalable, and easy for other teams to build upon. You will also focus on the specialized native challenges that cannot be solved with web technology, ensuring the Verkada mobile experience remains fast, secure, and deeply integrated with the Android OS.
What You'll Do
  • Native UI Platform: Maintain and evolve our existing Native Component Library built with Jetpack Compose. You will ensure these "Lego bricks" are scalable, accessible, and easily consumable by other product teams to ensure a consistent, fluid experience.
  • Platform Infrastructure & DX: Elevate the "Developer Experience" for Android. This includes optimizing our CI/CD pipelines, expanding test automation strategies, and hardening an automated, multi-team release process.
  • Network & Reliability Layer: Maintain a high-performance networking stack that handles the complexities of offline-first synchronization, intelligent caching, and secure data transit between native services and the cloud.
  • Systems & Hardware Integration: Own the implementation of low-level protocols (BLE, NFC, and custom Wi-Fi handshakes) that allow phones to talk to our physical hardware securely and reliably.
  • The Native-Web Bridge: Optimize the type-safe communication layer that allows dynamic web-based components to interact securely with native device sensors, secure enclaves, and core system logic.
  • Architecture Evolution: Act as a technical consultant to other product teams, evaluating new patterns (such as Server-Driven UI) to determine how we can best balance native performance with global engineering velocity.
What You Bring
  • 6+ years of professional Android development with a deep mastery of Kotlin and the Android SDK.
  • Infrastructure & Tooling: Strong experience with mobile CI/CD (e.g., GitHub Actions, Bitrise) and a "test-first" mentality. You enjoy building tools that make other engineers more productive.
  • Networking & Protocols: Deep understanding of the networking stack (OkHttp, Retrofit, Protobuf) and experience handling unreliable network conditions at scale.
  • Hardware & Connectivity: Hands-on experience with Bluetooth (BLE), NFC, or the nuances of Android background execution limits.
  • Modern UI Mastery: Expert proficiency in Jetpack Compose and experience scaling shared UI libraries across multiple teams.
  • Release Engineering: Experience managing the complexity of the Google Play Store release cycle for apps with high deployment frequency and multiple contributors.
Why Join Us
  • Force Multiplier: You aren't just shipping features; you are building the foundation. Every improvement you make to the platform is a win for dozens of other engineers and thousands of customers.
  • The "Hard" Problems: You get to focus on the deep-tech challenges that web technology can't touch: hardware handshakes, battery-efficient backgrounding, and high-performance infrastructure.
  • Direct Impact: Work at a company with proven product-market fit, where your work directly protects people and assets worldwide.
  • Onsite Collaboration: Partner daily with hardware and firmware teams in an environment that values technical excellence and fast iteration.
