Legal Writing Intern information

What is a legal writing intern?

Legal writing interns are students or recent graduates who work with law firms, courts, or legal departments to assist with drafting, editing, and researching legal documents. Their responsibilities typically include preparing memos, briefs, motions, and other legal materials under the supervision of experienced attorneys. This internship helps them develop strong legal research and writing skills, gain practical experience, and build their professional network within the legal field.

What types of projects and assignments can a legal writing intern expect to work on?

As a Legal Writing Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of assignments such as drafting legal memoranda, summarizing case law, preparing briefs, and assisting with research for ongoing cases. Interns often collaborate closely with attorneys and paralegals, receiving feedback to improve both their writing and analytical skills. You'll also likely attend meetings or court sessions to gain a broader understanding of legal processes. These experiences provide valuable exposure to real-world legal work and help build a strong foundation for a future legal career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a legal writing intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Legal Writing Intern, you need strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of legal research and writing, often supported by coursework in law or pre-law studies. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis and proficiency in Microsoft Office are typically required. Exceptional written communication, time management, and the ability to accept feedback are important soft skills that help you excel. These skills ensure accuracy, clarity, and the ability to produce high-quality legal documents in a deadline-driven environment.
