What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Lean Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lean Consultant, you need expertise in process improvement methodologies, problem-solving, and data analysis, typically supported by a degree in engineering, business, or a related field. Familiarity with Lean Six Sigma tools, value stream mapping, and certifications such as Lean Six Sigma Green or Black Belt are highly valuable. Strong communication, facilitation, and change management skills help drive stakeholder engagement and successful project outcomes. These competencies are essential for effectively identifying inefficiencies, implementing sustainable improvements, and delivering measurable value to clients.

What is Lean Consulting?

Lean Consulting is a professional service that helps organizations improve efficiency, reduce waste, and optimize processes by applying Lean principles. Lean consultants analyze workflows, identify areas of inefficiency, and implement strategies to streamline operations. Their goal is to create more value for customers while using fewer resources, often resulting in cost savings and improved quality. Lean Consulting is widely used in manufacturing, healthcare, and service industries to foster continuous improvement and a culture of operational excellence.

Lean Consulting involves advising organizations on implementing Lean principles to optimize processes, often across multiple clients. Process Improvement Specialists focus on analyzing and improving internal processes within a specific organization. While both roles require similar certifications and work in related environments, Lean Consulting emphasizes external consulting and strategic implementation, whereas Process Improvement Specialists concentrate on internal process enhancements.

What are some typical challenges Lean Consultants face when implementing process improvements in organizations?

Lean Consultants often encounter resistance to change from employees who are accustomed to existing processes. Overcoming this requires strong communication skills and the ability to demonstrate the benefits of Lean methodologies. Additionally, consultants must adapt Lean principles to fit the unique culture and operational needs of each client, which can be complex in large or highly regulated organizations. Collaborating closely with cross-functional teams is essential to ensure buy-in and successful, sustainable implementation.

Job description

Lean Consultant

Value Driven Solutions (VDS) is looking for a Lean Consultant to join our interim executive bench, with this engagement deploying on-site at our PE-backed manufacturing client in the [Location] region. The Lean Consultant is the engine of the VDS Value-Driven Approach® — teaching, coaching, and leading structured continuous improvement that produces measurable impact in days and weeks, not months and quarters.

The ideal candidate will enjoy being on the shop floor every day and have the ability to dig into a process, weigh kaizen and countermeasure options, and deliver the best possible safety, quality, delivery, and cost outcome. The ideal candidate will apply their command of Lean tools and adult learning and communicate effectively with operators, supervisors, managers, and directors.

Responsibilities:

  • Lean leadership – Lead kaizen events, value-stream mapping, and structured problem-solving on the client floor. Drive measurable improvement in safety, quality, delivery, cost, and inventory. Quantify and document financial impact and partner with Finance to validate savings.
  • Daily management systems – Build and stand up daily management systems, tier meetings, and visual management. Coach client leaders — supervisors, managers, directors — on Lean leadership behaviors.
  • Capability transfer – Train client teams on Lean tools (5S, SMED, TPM, standard work, A3, 8D, DMAIC). Transfer capability so the client sustains improvement after VDS exits.

Requirements:

  • 10+ years of hands-on Lean or OpEx implementation experience
  • Track record of leading 20+ kaizen events with documented financial impact
  • Strong floor presence and ability to coach across all levels of an organization
  • Lean Six Sigma Black Belt or Master Black Belt strongly preferred
  • Bachelor's degree preferred; equivalent OpEx pedigree (Toyota, Danaher, ITW, Parker, GE) considered
  • Prior consulting or interim Lean leadership experience preferred
  • Multilingual capability (Spanish, Mandarin, Portuguese) a plus for international engagements
