How much do leakage engineer jobs pay per year?

As of May 29, 2026, the average yearly pay for leakage engineer in the United States is $111,632.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $80,500.00 and $132,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Leakage Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Leakage Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or civil engineering, with expertise in water distribution systems and leak detection methods, often supported by relevant engineering degrees or certifications. Familiarity with leak detection technologies such as acoustic sensors, correlators, GIS mapping tools, and SCADA systems is commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with teams and addressing complex network issues. These competencies are vital for minimizing water loss, ensuring infrastructure reliability, and supporting sustainable utility operations.

What are the main challenges Leakage Engineers face when detecting and resolving water leaks in utility networks?

Leakage Engineers often encounter challenges such as accessing difficult or underground locations, interpreting complex acoustic signals, and accurately pinpointing leaks without disrupting service. They must frequently collaborate with field teams, use advanced detection equipment, and sometimes work outside regular hours to address urgent leaks. Staying updated on the latest detection technologies and maintaining strong communication with utilities and repair crews are essential for success in this dynamic role.

What are Leakage Engineers?

Leakage Engineers are specialized professionals who detect, locate, and help prevent leaks in water distribution systems, gas pipelines, or other infrastructure. Their work often involves using advanced equipment such as acoustic sensors, ground microphones, and data loggers to identify leaks that are not visible to the naked eye. Leakage Engineers play a crucial role in minimizing water loss, reducing costs, and ensuring the safety and efficiency of utility networks. They may also advise on repairs and maintenance strategies to prevent future leaks.

What is the difference between Leakage Engineer vs Pipeline Integrity Engineer?

AspectLeakage EngineerPipeline Integrity Engineer
Required CredentialsEngineering degree, certifications in leak detectionEngineering degree, certifications in pipeline integrity
Work EnvironmentField inspections, leak detection systemsMonitoring, maintenance, and assessment of pipelines
Employer & Industry UsageOil & gas, water utilities, chemical plantsOil & gas, pipeline operators, energy sector

The Leakage Engineer primarily focuses on detecting and repairing leaks in various systems, while the Pipeline Integrity Engineer concentrates on maintaining the overall integrity and safety of pipelines. Both roles require similar technical skills and certifications but differ in scope—Leakage Engineers target leak detection, whereas Pipeline Integrity Engineers oversee comprehensive pipeline health.
