What are Leading Tone Lessons?

Leading Tone Lessons are music instruction sessions focused on understanding and using the leading tone, which is the seventh scale degree that resolves up to the tonic. These lessons teach students how to identify, sing, and incorporate the leading tone in melodies and harmonies, which is essential for creating tension and resolution in music. Students often learn about its role in different musical contexts, such as classical, jazz, and popular music, and practice ear training and sight-singing exercises to master its use. Mastery of the leading tone helps musicians enhance their musical phrasing and overall musicianship.

A typical day for an instructor teaching Leading Tone Lessons involves planning and delivering music theory and ear training sessions focused on understanding and identifying the leading tone in various musical contexts. Instructors often assess each student's current level, then customize exercises and repertoire to address unique learning goals—whether it's improving aural skills, sight-singing, or compositional understanding. Collaboration with other music educators and participation in departmental meetings are common, ensuring lesson plans are aligned with overall curriculum standards.
