What is a leadership consultant?

Leadership consultants are professionals who help organizations and individuals develop effective leadership skills and strategies. They assess current leadership practices, identify areas for improvement, and design tailored development programs. Their work often includes coaching executives, facilitating workshops, and advising on organizational change to enhance leadership effectiveness and business performance.

How does a leadership consultant typically collaborate with client organizations to implement lasting change?

Leadership Consultants work closely with client organizations by first assessing current leadership practices and culture through interviews, surveys, and observation. They then design tailored development programs, workshops, or coaching sessions to address specific leadership challenges. Consultants often partner with HR teams and senior executives to ensure that recommendations align with organizational goals and are sustainable. Success often relies on strong communication skills, ongoing feedback loops, and the ability to adapt strategies to diverse team dynamics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a leadership consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Leadership Consultant, you need expertise in organizational development, change management, and leadership theory, often supported by a relevant bachelor's or master's degree. Familiarity with assessment tools like 360-degree feedback, psychometric evaluations, and leadership development frameworks is typical, and certifications such as ICF coaching credentials can be advantageous. Exceptional communication, analytical thinking, and emotional intelligence are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications are crucial for effectively guiding leaders, driving organizational change, and delivering measurable results for clients.

Job description

The Opportunity

Together we fight for everyone’s opportunity for a better financial future. We will do this together — with customers, partners and colleagues. We will fight for others, not against: We will stand up for and champion everyone’s access to opportunities. The status quo is not good enough … we believe every individual and every community deserves access to financial opportunities. We are determined to support both individuals and communities in reaching a better financial future. We know that reaching this future depends on our actions today. Like our Purpose Statement, Voya believes in being bold and committed to action. We are committed to a work environment where the differences that we are born with — and those we acquire throughout our lives — are understood, valued and intentionally pursued. We believe that our employees own our culture and have a responsibility to foster an environment where we all feel comfortable bringing our whole selves to work. Purposefully bringing our differences together to positively influence our culture, serve our clients and enrich our communities is essential to our vision. Are you ready to join a company with a strong purpose and a winning culture? Voya Investment Management is seeking a seasoned asset management marketing leader to lead institutional channel marketing strategy for the firm’s institutional and insurance businesses. This is a high-impact role for a commercially minded leader who can set channel direction, build audience‑specific programs, focus resources, and translate business priorities into thoughtful execution that deepens client engagement and supports growth across institutional channels. You will partner closely with Institutional and Insurance Distribution leaders, consultant relations, investment teams, product, digital, content, events, brand, and sales enablement partners to develop integrated channel plans, client segmentation strategies, campaign initiatives, educational content, and product messaging that are aligned to distribution priorities and firmwide objectives. As a member of the Marketing Leadership Team, you will help shape broader marketing priorities while developing two experienced direct reports. The successful candidate will bring institutional market credibility, strong channel marketing acumen, practical product marketing expertise, alternatives experience, and the energy to execute while leading. Candidates should be comfortable creating structure, setting measurable objectives, developing scalable programs, leading cross‑functional work, and building marketing efforts that support Voya IM’s growth ambitions across institutional and insurance channels.

Key Responsibilities

Set, oversee, and communicate measurable institutional channel marketing objectives in partnership with Institutional and Insurance Distribution leadership, consultant relations, and other key business partners.

Translate segment business plans, pipeline priorities, consultant engagement needs, and client lifecycle stages into focused channel marketing plans with clear activation steps, accountabilities, and measures of impact.

Develop client segmentation support and marketing programs tailored to institutional audiences, including pension, insurance, consultant, and related client channels.

Lead the strategic development and implementation of marketing deliverables across design, build, launch, monitor, and measure phases, ensuring programs are timely, coordinated, and commercially useful.

Build relationships and collaborate with portfolio managers, investment teams, sales teams, consultant relations, product, content, digital, events, brand, and marketing peers to produce materials and messaging that support sales growth, retention, asset goals, and client engagement within institutional channels.

Cultivate a deep understanding of Voya IM investment capabilities and institutional client needs, using product and competitor insights to shape differentiated channel messaging, investment narratives, and sales enablement resources.

Lead institutional channel activation for Voya IM’s alternatives platform, developing strategies that increase awareness, strengthen credibility, and support long‑cycle capital raising and consultant engagement.

Work closely with digital marketing and sales enablement partners to develop targeted digital approaches, distribution tools, CRM‑informed campaigns, and analytics that improve adoption, engagement, and business impact.

Utilize competitor data, marketplace trends, client feedback, and distribution insights to identify opportunities to differentiate Voya IM in the institutional marketplace.

Set direction, clarify priorities, and provide day‑to‑day guidance to ensure team resources are focused on the highest‑impact institutional channel opportunities.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required.

10+ years of channel marketing experience in asset management, with meaningful exposure to institutional distribution and institutional client segments.

Deep understanding of institutional buying dynamics, plan sponsors, insurers, consultants, relationship‑based distribution models, and consultant research processes.

Demonstrated experience developing institutional channel marketing plans, client segmentation strategies, lifecycle campaigns, and measurable marketing programs.

Experience working with institutional sales professionals, consultant relationship teams, investment teams, product partners, and marketing peers to support client engagement and distribution priorities.

Strong product marketing expertise, including positioning, investment narratives, competitive analysis, product launches, sales enablement, and go‑to‑market execution, with the ability to apply that expertise in a channel‑led context.

Experience marketing alternative investment strategies and making private market capabilities clear, credible, and commercially useful for institutional audiences.

Ability to earn trust with senior distribution, product, investment, and marketing stakeholders, and to influence through sound judgment, clarity, collaboration, and follow‑through.

Familiarity with CRM, marketing automation, digital marketing, sales enablement platforms, and analytics used to understand adoption, engagement, and business impact.

Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with strong project leadership and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment.

People leadership skills grounded in coaching, prioritization, accountability, and a bias toward delivering influential work to market.
