Lead Mobile Developer information

What is a lead mobile developer?

A Lead Mobile Developer is a senior software engineer responsible for overseeing the design, development, and maintenance of mobile applications. They lead a team of developers, set technical direction, ensure code quality, and coordinate with other departments such as product management and design. In addition to hands-on coding, they mentor junior developers and contribute to architectural decisions to ensure the success of mobile projects. Lead Mobile Developers often have expertise in both iOS and Android platforms and are skilled at managing project timelines and deliverables. Their role bridges the gap between technical execution and strategic planning in mobile app development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lead mobile developer?

To thrive as a Lead Mobile Developer, you need extensive expertise in mobile application development, proficiency in programming languages like Swift, Kotlin, or Java, and a solid understanding of software architecture, often supported by a relevant degree and experience in leadership roles. Familiarity with version control systems (like Git), CI/CD pipelines, and common mobile development frameworks, along with certifications such as Google Associate Android Developer or Apple Certified iOS Developer, are highly valuable. Strong communication, mentorship, and problem-solving skills distinguish top performers in leading agile teams and collaborating cross-functionally. These skills ensure the delivery of high-quality mobile solutions, foster team growth, and drive successful project outcomes in a fast-evolving tech landscape.

How does a lead mobile developer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

A Lead Mobile Developer often works closely with designers, product managers, backend developers, and QA engineers to ensure seamless delivery of mobile applications. They facilitate technical discussions, clarify requirements, and help resolve blockers, acting as the main point of contact for mobile-related matters. Effective communication and a collaborative mindset are crucial, as the role balances coding responsibilities with mentoring team members and aligning development with business goals.

Mobile Application Developer (Calgary, AB)

Job description

ROLE We are a large North American construction company, but we build more than projects. We have developed a proprietary Digital Operations platform that runs across our entire organization, supported by an in-house technology stack spanning custom applications, cloud infrastructure, data integrations, and enterprise analytics. We operate a full software development lifecycle internally, from requirements through architecture, development, testing, deployment, and ongoing support.

This is real product development work driving real operational outcomes at scale. As a Mobile Application Developer within this team, you will be primarily accountable for our native iOS applications. Our workforce operates on remote project sites where connectivity can be unreliable and the need for robust, efficient technology is high.

The people using what you build rely on software in demanding environments, so applications must be fast, reliable, intuitive, and resilient when connectivity is poor. We have made a deliberate decision to deliver field applications on native iOS because low-code and cross-platform tooling has reached a ceiling on the performance, offline reliability, hardware integration, and interface quality these workflows demand. You will help us build beyond that ceiling.

This is a hands-on development role where native iOS is the core skill. You will also work across the wider platform, including Power Platform, Azure, Dataverse, and integration development, because our mobile applications are not standalone products; they are one surface of a single connected ecosystem built on a three-layer architecture of DataCore, Applications, and Insights. Experience in the Microsoft ecosystem is valuable, but we are more interested in a strong mobile developer who can learn the surrounding platform than a generalist without deep mobile capability.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Design, develop, and deploy native iOS applications in Swift and SwiftUI supporting field and office workflows across Project Operations, Asset Operations, People, and Commercial functions. Build offline-first applications with robust local persistence and synchronization, ensuring full functionality on remote sites with intermittent or no connectivity, and reliable conflict resolution on reconnect. Integrate with physical hardware and device capabilities, including Bluetooth Low Energy peripherals, NFC and RFID readers, GPS and geofencing, camera capture, and barcode and document scanning.

Build native clients against the DataCore data and API layer, including Dataverse, Azure APIs, and enterprise systems of record, following our API-first and hub-and-spoke integration patterns, and extend the backend services those clients depend on. Replatform high-usage Power Apps field solutions to native iOS where performance, offline capability, or user experience justifies it, and lead the transition of existing cross-platform mobile applications to native. Contribute to development across the broader Digital Operations platform, including Power Apps, Power Automate, and integration work, applying the right tool to the problem rather than defaulting to one technology.

Manage the application release lifecycle in coordination with the broader team, including build pipelines, TestFlight distribution, and managed enterprise deployment to company devices. Follow and help establish mobile development standards covering architecture, source control, code review, testing, and security, in alignment with platform governance frameworks. Collaborate with Operations Analysts, business stakeholders, and frontline personnel to translate requirements into scalable solutions, and validate them through direct observation of the work being digitized.

Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, and maintain technical documentation including solution designs, API specifications, and data models. Note: In addition to these duties personnel are required to carry out such other duties as may be reasonably required in order to support the objectives of the company. POSITION REQUIREMENTS Qualifications Bachelor's degree or diploma in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field.

Demonstrable portfolio of shipped iOS applications, whether commercial, enterprise, or independently published. Experience Typically 4 to 8 years of professional software development experience, including at least 2 years focused on native iOS development. This role may be filled at either an intermediate or senior level depending on the depth of experience the successful candidate brings; a senior appointment would carry broader responsibility for mobile architecture and technical direction.

Depth in native iOS development is the priority. Experience across the following areas is helpful, but not required in every category: Swift and SwiftUI, with working knowledge of UIKit for legacy and interoperability scenarios iOS application architecture, state management, and modular code organization Offline-first design using SQLite and/or SwiftData, including synchronization and conflict resolution Apple hardware frameworks: CoreBluetooth, CoreNFC, CoreLocation, AVFoundation, VisionKit REST API consumption, OAuth 2.0 and Microsoft Entra ID authentication, and asynchronous networking Xcode toolchain, TestFlight, App Store Connect, provisioning, and enterprise distribution via Apple Business Manager and Microsoft Intune Source control and collaborative workflow (Git, branching, pull requests, code review) Microsoft Power Platform: Power Apps, Power Automate, Dataverse Azure cloud services, functions, storage, database services, API management Hands-on coding ability in one or more of: Swift, TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, C# SQL query writing, data modeling fundamentals, and JSON and XML data interchange formats Experience building applications for construction, resource, logistics, or other field-based operating environments is an asset. Experience with ruggedized hardware, RFID or BLE asset tracking, or telematics integration is an asset

Exposure to cross-platform frameworks (Flutter, .NET MAUI, React Native), on-device machine learning, or applied AI in operational applications is an asset. Skills and Knowledge Strong analytical and problem-solving ability with attention to detail and accuracy. Genuine interest in how physical work gets done, and willingness to spend time on site and in the warehouse to understand the workflows being digitized

Ability to learn and master new technologies, frameworks, and business domains quickly. Sound judgment on where native development is warranted and where an existing platform capability is the better answer. Effective communication skills, able to collaborate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders and explain technical concepts clearly.

Self-motivated with strong time management, able to manage competing priorities and deliver under deadlines. A strong desire to continuously learn and improve, with a bias toward action and practical results. WORKING CONDITIONS This is a permanent position based at our Calgary office, operating on a hybrid schedule with a five-day work week, 8-hour days.

Travel to offices or project sites across North America may be required on an ad hoc basis. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS The Mobile Application Developer reports to the Director, Business Systems - North America. We thank all applicants in advance.

Only those selected for an interview will be contacted. Department: Business Systems This is a permanent position
