What is a lead data scientist?

Lead Data Scientists are experienced professionals who oversee data science teams and projects within an organization. They are responsible for designing and implementing advanced analytics models, managing data pipelines, and turning data insights into actionable business strategies. In addition to their technical expertise, Lead Data Scientists collaborate with stakeholders, mentor junior data scientists, and ensure that data-driven solutions align with business goals. Their role often bridges the gap between data science and business decision-making, making them key contributors to an organization's success.

How does a lead data scientist typically balance hands-on technical work with team leadership responsibilities?

A Lead Data Scientist often splits their time between developing advanced data models and guiding team members through project execution. While they remain deeply involved in coding, data exploration, and validation, they also mentor junior staff, oversee project timelines, and ensure alignment with business goals. Balancing these tasks requires strong organizational skills, the ability to delegate, and regular communication with both technical teams and non-technical stakeholders. This dual focus not only drives project success but also supports the professional development of the entire data science team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a lead data scientist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lead Data Scientist, you need advanced expertise in statistics, machine learning, data modeling, and strong programming skills (often in Python or R), typically supported by an advanced degree in a quantitative field. Familiarity with big data platforms (such as Hadoop or Spark), cloud computing tools, and experience with data visualization and version control systems are commonly required. Outstanding leadership, communication, and project management abilities help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial for designing impactful data solutions, guiding teams, and effectively translating complex analyses into actionable business strategies.

Job description

*This position is contingent upon contract award*

Amentum is seeking an AI Modeling Specialist (Senior) to support Combatant Command Operations in the Information Environment (OIE) under the Apollo program. The selected candidate will design, develop, and deploy advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning models that enable integrated planning, data exploitation, operational analysis, and decision support. This role directly supports automation, scalability, and data-driven decision superiority across global operations.

As an AI Modeling Specialist (Senior) you will have the opportunity to:

  • Serve as the lead AI/ML technical expert supporting data-driven operations across planning, execution, and assessment activities for Combatant Commands (CCMDs).
  • Design, develop, and deploy machine learning, artificial intelligence, and advanced statistical models to support operational analysis, campaign assessment, and decision support.
  • Develop and operationalize AI-enabled capabilities that automate data ingestion, processing, and analysis across structured and unstructured data sources.
  • Build and maintain scalable model pipelines and architectures supporting cross-domain and enterprise-level data integration.
  • Apply AI/ML techniques (e.g., predictive modeling, clustering, natural language processing, network analysis) to identify patterns, trends, narratives, and adversary behaviors in the information environment.
  • Integrate AI/ML outputs into operational workflows, enabling support to planning, integration, data operations, assessment, and operational execution.
  • Collaborate with planners, Assessment Integrators, Data Scientists, and operational staff to translate analytic outputs into actionable insights for decision-makers.
  • Develop and support AI-enabled dashboards, decision-support tools, and analytic platforms that provide real-time or near-real-time insights.
  • Support the development of reusable models and frameworks that can scale across multiple CCMDs and mission sets.
  • Ensure models are transparent, explainable, and aligned to mission requirements, including measurement of effectiveness and operational impact (ROI-informed outputs).

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have an active Top-Secret security clearance and be SCI eligible. Note: US Citizenship is required to obtain a Top-Secret Clearance.
  • Bachelor's degree in data science, computer science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, mathematics, or related technical field with 8+ years of experience (advanced degree equivalency applies)
  • Demonstrated experience developing and deploying AI/ML models in operational or mission-focused environments
  • Strong proficiency in Python (or similar), including AI/ML libraries (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn)
  • Experience applying advanced analytics, machine learning, and statistical modeling techniques to large and complex datasets
  • Experience developing and managing data pipelines, model pipelines, and cloud-based architectures (AWS, Azure, or equivalent)
  • Experience integrating multi-source data (structured, semi-structured, unstructured) into analytic models
  • Experience applying AI/ML to information environment, intelligence, cyber, or national security problem sets
  • Demonstrated ability to translate complex AI/ML outputs into clear, actionable insights for operational decision-makers
  • Experience supporting data-driven decision support, operational analysis, or mission-focused analytics environments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in AI, machine learning, data science, or related field
  • Experience developing AI-enabled automation frameworks or platforms supporting mission workflows
  • Experience applying natural language processing (NLP), social media analytics, or narrative analysis in OIE contexts
  • Experience implementing data standardization, ontology, or schema alignment frameworks for enterprise analytics
  • Experience supporting cross-CCMD or distributed data environments at scale
  • Experience integrating AI/ML solutions into operational systems (e.g., C2IE, Maven or similar platforms)
  • Experience supporting campaign assessment, MOP/MOE enablement, or ROI analysis through advanced analytics
  • Experience working in joint, interagency, or coalition operational environments
  • Demonstrated ability to develop reusable, scalable AI/ML solutions across multiple mission areas
