Job description

Survey Instrument Man- Responsible for the grading of construction layout .
Essential Functions of the position:
• Must be able to sit or stand for multiple hours
• Must be proficient with a computer and various software
• Must be able to work long hours, weekends and at home or telecommute as needed to
complete work
• Must be able to work in outdoor environments and be exposed to heat, rain, cold, wind, and
other weather activities
• Must be able to walk long distances.
• Must be able to lift 50 lbs.
• Must be able to perform manual labor including but not limited to raking, shoveling,
chopping, hammering etc.
• Must be able to wear required PPE as per safety manual and OSHA regulations.
The responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Verify the accuracy of survey data including measurements and calculations conducted at
survey sites.
• Search legal records, survey records, and land titles to obtain information about property
boundaries in areas to be surveyed.
• Calculate heights, depths, relative positions, property lines, and other characteristics of land or
land features, roadways, pipes, structures, ponds, and other items per plans and specifications.
• Prepare and maintain sketches, maps, reports, and legal descriptions of surveys to describe,
certify, and assume liability for work performed.
• Prepare or supervise preparation of all data, charts, plots, maps, records, and documents
related to surveys.
• Compute geodetic measurements and interpret survey data to determine positions, shapes,
and elevations of geomorphic and topographic features.
• Determine longitudes and latitudes of important features and boundaries in survey areas
using theodolites, transits, levels, and satellite-based global positioning systems (GPS).
• Record the results of surveys including the shape, contour, location, elevation, and dimensions
of land or land features, roadways, pipes, structures, ponds, and other items per plans and
specifications.
• Coordinate findings with engineers, clients, Vallencourt personnel and others concerned with
projects.
• Establish fixed points for use in making maps, using geodetic and engineering instruments
• Train assistants and helpers, and direct their work in such activities as performing surveys or
drafting maps.
• Adjust surveying instruments to maintain their accuracy
• Plan and conduct ground surveys designed to establish baselines, elevations, and other
geodetic measurements.
• Chop, cut and saw trees, bushes, and other debris in order to establish line of site for
surveying or layout purposes
• Maintain survey and GPS equipment used for both surveying and heavy equipment.
• Stake and grade layout for land or land features, roadways, pipes, structures, ponds, and other
items per plans and specifications.
• Transfer information collected into electronic form and distribute to interested personnel.
