What is a law internship?

Law internships are short-term work experiences offered to students or recent graduates interested in pursuing a legal career. These internships typically take place in law firms, corporate legal departments, government agencies, or non-profit organizations. Interns assist with legal research, draft documents, attend court proceedings, and gain practical insight into the legal profession. Law internships help students build professional networks, develop essential skills, and enhance their resumes for future job opportunities.

What do law interns do?

As a law intern, you can expect to assist with legal research, draft memos and briefs, attend client meetings, and observe court proceedings. You may also help attorneys prepare case files, organize documents for litigation, and support administrative tasks. Law internships often provide opportunities to work closely with experienced lawyers, offering valuable insight into daily legal practice and how teams collaborate. These experiences help interns develop practical skills and understand the workflow within a legal environment.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a law intern?

To thrive as a Law Intern, you need a solid understanding of legal principles, strong research and writing abilities, and enrollment in or completion of a law degree program. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, as well as proficiency in Microsoft Office, is typically expected. Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and effective communication help interns stand out and contribute meaningfully to legal teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for producing accurate work, supporting attorneys, and gaining valuable hands-on legal experience.
