The City of Redding is accepting applications for the position of Lateral Police Officer within the Redding Police Department. Lateral Police Officer: The Redding Police Department is now offering up to a $60,000 signing bonus to qualified Lateral Police Officers as well as two weeks of vacation upon successful completion of the probationary period. Compensation is based on years of service and experience as a Peace Officer.

Qualifications we're looking for

• Knowledge of practices and procedures of administration of justice and criminal law, City ordinances and regulations.
• Knowledge of investigation and crime prevention methods.
• Knowledge of rules of evidence and laws governing the apprehension, arrest, custody, and prosecution of law violators and effective public relations.
• Ability to interact effectively with the public and employees.
• Ability to read, understand, and carry out departmental policies, rules, instructions, laws and regulations.
• Ability to analyze situations and adopt a quick, effective, and reasonable course of action.

Education and Experience:

• Typical education includes a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Currently working with another agency OR meet California POST standards for a Police Officer.
• Completion of probation and one (1) year of street patrol experience.
• Applicants must attach a copy of a Basic POST certification.

Special Requirements:

• Minimum age of 21 years at time of appointment as a peace officer per government code section 1031.4
• No felony convictions.
• Shall be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship.
• Possession of the appropriate California driver's license, or the ability to acquire one within ten days of appointment.

Out of state Officer candidates applying to a lateral Police Officer position may meet California's Regular Basic course training requirement by completing the Basic Course Wavier process. In order to be considered for hiring as a lateral Officer pursuant to this application process, the applicant must have completed the waiver process through the California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and present proof provided by California POST of a granted waiver with their application. Examination process: The examination process may include an oral board examination, a written examination, practical examination or any combination thereof.
This recruitment will be adding to an eligibility list and may be used to fill current and future Police Officer vacancies. This recruitment will be open until filled and may close at any time with little or no notice.

Selection Process: Final appointment is contingent upon:

• Positive past employment references
• Passing a city paid fingerprint criminal conviction check
• Passing a pre-employment medical exam and drug and alcohol screening test
• Successful completion of a polygraph examination
• Successful completion of a psychological evaluation
• Positions within the Police Department require applicants pass an extensive background investigation prior to appointment.

Veteran's Credit: Applicants who attach a copy of the DD-214 to their application indicating "Honorable Discharge" from military service and receive a passing score on the examination process will have two (2) additional points added to their final examination score.

Holidays:
An average of thirteen and a half per year. Fire Association covered employees receive a payment in lieu of holidays. Holiday compensation for Redding Peace Officers Association and Redding Police Managers Association employees has been converted to base pay.
Vacation:
Two weeks per year up to the fourth year of service, three weeks up to nine years of service, three and a half weeks up to fourteen years of service, four weeks up to nineteen years of service, four and a half weeks up to twenty-four years of service, five weeks after twenty-four years of service. For accrual rates for Fire Department shift employees, refer to MOU. Part-time and temporary employees may be eligible for some vacation/paid time off benefits.
Sick Leave:
Twelve working days of sick leave are accrued each year. Unused sick leave may be credited toward retirement. For accrual rates for Fire Department shift employees, refer to MOU.
Health Insurance:
Excellent medical, dental, vision, and life for employee and dependent, and long-term disability for employees.
Retirement:
Full-time employees are covered by CalPERS (formula is dependent on hire date and member status in CalPERS) and are not covered under the Social Security System.
Administrative Leave:
Management positions are eligible to receive 40 hours of administrative leave per calendar year as authorized by the department director; additional leave up to 40 hours may be granted by the City Manager.
Deferred Compensation Plans:
Available for interested employees.
Agency Shop Requirements: Some job classifications are represented by collective bargaining units, the employees of which may choose to join and pay union dues.
Part-Time Retirement Benefit Program:
Part-time, seasonal, and full-time temporary employees either participate in the Social Security System or the PARS Alternate Retirement System depending upon bargaining unit assignment.
SDI:
Redding Peace Officers Association represented positions do not participate in SDI.
