Job description

We are seeking experienced Outside Machinists to support shipyard operations in the Hampton Roads area, working on critical mechanical systems aboard naval and commercial vessels. This role focuses on shipboard machinery such as pumps, valves, propulsion systems, and auxiliary equipment to ensure safe and efficient vessel operation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, remove, repair, and align shipboard machinery and mechanical systems
  • Disassemble, inspect, and rebuild pumps, valves, gearboxes, motors, and rotating equipment
  • Perform precision alignments using dial indicators, micrometers, calipers, and other measuring tools
  • Troubleshoot mechanical issues and support corrective repairs
  • Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical manuals
  • Install piping systems for steam, exhaust, suction, and discharge lines
  • Overhaul and repair propulsion systems, turbines, engines, and auxiliary equipment
  • Install bearings, seals, couplings, and machinery foundations
  • Work in confined spaces, tanks, voids, and elevated areas aboard vessels
  • Follow NAVSEA standards, OSHA maritime regulations, and shipyard safety protocols
  • Maintain proper tool control, housekeeping, and safe work practices

Required Qualifications

  • 3–5+ years of shipyard or marine mechanical experience (level-dependent)
  • Strong knowledge of pumps, valves, propulsion systems, and rotating machinery
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and mechanical drawings
  • Proficiency with precision measuring tools and mechanical alignment techniques
  • Ability to lift 40–60 lbs and perform physically demanding work
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, heights, and industrial environments
  • Must be able to obtain DBIDS or access to military installations (if required)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working on U.S. Navy or commercial vessels
  • Familiarity with NAVSEA standards and Tag-Out procedures
  • Laser alignment experience
  • OSHA Maritime certification
  • Experience with pump/valve overhaul and propulsion systems

Work Environment

  • Shipboard and shipyard environments (dry docks, piers, and industrial facilities)
  • Exposure to heat, noise, confined spaces, and elevated work areas
  • May require overtime, weekend shifts, or travel within the Hampton Roads region
