Press Operator II

Full-time 30-40 hrs/wk $26.00 per/hr.

In accordance with Assets, Inc. core values and mission, this position prepares, operates and maintains all printing presses and/or all bindery equipment. The Press Operator II uses traditional printing methods as well as modern processes to organize and produce printed materials. The Press Operator II works closely with the Print Services Manager and assists the Print Shop/Bindery team as required. The Press Operator II is expected to provide services within standard technical procedures for the printing industry.  The Press Operator II will generate multi-color, close register and moderately difficult or long run, single color books as well as a fair amount of heavy coverage and 1-4 color printing. The Press Operator II assists the Print Services Manager when needed, with proposals, bidding, negotiating print jobs for the bindery and pressroom. The Press Operator II assists the Print Services Manager with staff training, quality assurance, and meeting timelines for printing jobs. This position may require de-escalating verbally or physically aggressive individuals according to identified procedures and individual client protocols.

1. Adheres to and demonstrates Assets, Inc. core values, mission, policies, and compliance plan in the performance of all aspects of this position.
2. Provides direct labor in accordance with OSHA safety standards at the work site.
3. Works with the Prepress Technician to identify and resolve any potential problems with a job.
4. Maintains all inks and chemical inventories for presses and performs a monthly paper inventory.
5. Operates and maintains all print shop equipment to include Heidelberg single and two color presses, Folder, Stitchmaster, Cutter, and other small bindery equipment.
6. Ensures that all printed materials are produced with limited defects such as misaligned registry, scumming, color variations, or visual blemishes.
7. Performs all basic and preventative maintenance to presses / bindery equipment as per manufacturer's specifications.
8. Cross trains and aids in pre-press activities as well as bindery functions.
9. Assists the Print Services Manager with proposals, bidding, and negotiating print jobs as needed.
10. Assists with CTP system as needed, as well as Digital Presses.
11. Assists the Print Services Manager to develop daily production schedules based on priorities and timelines.
12. Completes company required trainings and actively participates in company meetings.
13. Oversees all print and press operations and is responsible for quality control.
14. Maintains proactive relationships with customers and co-workers.
15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:

1. High School Diploma or G.E.D. required.
2. 2 to 4 years experience running similar offset presses, with demonstrated ability in tight register multi-color presswork required.
3. Two years experience in prepress and bindery machine tasks preferred.

Note: Formal education (apprenticeships for printing machine operators, formal postsecondary programs in printing equipment operation, etc.) may substitute experience requirements.

Language Skills:    Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization. 

Mathematical Skills:     Mathematical skills necessary to compute percentages, weights, and measures, and to calculate the amount of ink and paper needed to do a job. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:    Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:    Alaska driver's license and insured vehicle or reliable transportation.  Must be able to pass a criminal background check under the state regulations. Proof of driver’s license, insurance and educational credentials must be presented at time of hire.

1. Possess a firm understanding of OSHA Safety Standards.
2. Ability to interpret SDS materials.
3. Mechanical aptitude to make press/bindery equipment adjustments and/or repairs. Familiarity with electronics.
4. Attention to detail to locate and fix problems with print jobs and ability to work independently.
5. Comfortable with pressures of meeting deadlines and operating new equipment.
6. Mathematical skills necessary to compute percentages, weights, and measures, and to calculate the amount of ink and paper needed to do a job.
7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within the company and deals tactfully with the public/customers.
8. Basic computer skills to work with newer printing machines.
9. Effective communicator both orally and in writing.
10. Must be able to work in a team environment.
11. Be able to work with individuals with disabilities.
