How much do large animal jobs pay per hour?
What is a large animal?
A Large Animal job typically involves working with livestock and farm animals such as cattle, horses, sheep, and pigs. Professionals in these roles, including veterinarians and technicians, focus on animal health, nutrition, reproduction, and disease prevention. They may work on farms, ranches, or veterinary clinics, providing medical care and management support. This job requires knowledge of animal behavior, handling techniques, and sometimes physical endurance for fieldwork.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the large animal position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Large Animal Veterinarian, you need a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, a state veterinary license, and strong knowledge of livestock anatomy, diseases, and treatment protocols. Proficiency in specialized diagnostic tools such as ultrasound machines, mobile lab equipment, and the use of herd management software is often required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and physical stamina are valuable soft skills in handling both animals and clients. These skills are crucial for delivering high-quality care, ensuring animal welfare, and maintaining strong working relationships with farmers and ranchers in diverse, often challenging environments.
What are some common challenges faced by large animal veterinarians, and how are they addressed?
Large Animal Veterinarians often work in rural environments and may need to travel long distances to farms and ranches, which can make responding to emergencies challenging, especially during adverse weather or off-hours. They frequently work with animals much larger and sometimes less predictable than traditional pets, requiring careful handling techniques and safety precautions. To address these challenges, veterinarians typically receive extensive hands-on training and utilize proper equipment for animal restraint and transport. Many practices also foster a collaborative team environment where veterinarians consult with colleagues and vet technicians to solve complex cases. Staying updated with continued education and participating in industry networks helps professionals manage these demands and deliver excellent animal care.

Job description
Applications are invited from qualified individuals for a full-time, tenure track faculty position with the Large Animal Surgery in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences (https://wcvm.usask.ca/departments/large-clinical.php) at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM).
This position entails a 50% commitment to the large animal surgery service of the Veterinary Medical Centre (VMC) while providing supervision and instruction to undergraduate students - primarily those in the fourth or final year of the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program - as well as interns and residents. The successful candidate will also contribute to the department's teaching responsibilities, including lectures, laboratories, and demonstrations in Years 1 to 3 of the DVM curriculum, and graduate courses. The remaining 50% of the appointment will be devoted to research and scholarly activities, administrative responsibilities, and other academic pursuits.ย
The successful candidate will be expected to perform a wide range of surgical procedures on horses and food animals, including emergency and elective surgeries (both orthopedic and soft tissue), and provide quality pre- and post-operative care, ensuring the highest standards of animal care and client communication. They will also be expected to develop and maintain an active research program. Success will be reflected in the acquisition of research funding, the recruitment and mentoring of graduate students, and the dissemination of research findings through peer-reviewed outlets.
The WCVM (https://wcvm.usask.ca/) is Western Canada's regional college of veterinary medicine and currently enrolls about 360 undergraduate students from three western provinces and northern jurisdictions, as well as approximately 200 graduate students. The University of Saskatchewan is a member of U15 Canada - an association of the country's leading research-intensive universities - with a reputation for excellence in teaching and other scholarly activities. The university offers a full range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs to more than 26,000 students, including over 21,000 undergraduate and 4,500 graduate students.
Located within the WCVM, the VMC (https://vmc.usask.ca/) is a state-of-the-art AVMA- and AAHA-accredited hospital and referral centre. It offers specialty services and training in anesthesia; dentistry; dermatology; exotic, wild, and zoo animal medicine; internal medicine; medical imaging; nutrition; oncology; ophthalmology; radiation oncology; surgery; and theriogenology. The VMC provides the only comprehensive specialty and referral service for large animal surgery in Saskatchewan.
The University of Saskatchewan's main campus is situated on Treaty 6 Territory and the Homeland of the Metis. The University of Saskatchewan is located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, a city with a diverse and thriving economic base, a vibrant arts community and a full range of leisure opportunities. The University has a reputation for excellence in teaching, research and scholarly activities and offers a full range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs.
Applicants must hold a DVM degree or equivalent, have completed an approved residency in large animal surgery and earned an advanced degree in a related field, and either be certified, i.e., a Diplomate, of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons or be eligible for certification at the time of appointment. Diplomates of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons will also be considered. The successful applicant must be eligible to work in Canada and must obtain licensure with the Saskatchewan Veterinary Medical Association (https://svma.sk.ca/become-a-member/dvm/) by the start of the appointment. Given the extent of teaching in this role, prior teaching experience will be considered an asset.
The Large Animal Surgery Service currently operates with three faculty members, two residents, and one Specialty Intern. On-call and after-hours duties are shared among members of the service.
