JOB TITLE:
Grounds Specialist
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Turfgrass Management, Horticulture, Agronomy, Plant & Soil Science, Landscape Management, or related field (Required)
• 3-5 years professional grounds or landscape management experience preferred
• Valid Mississippi driver's license
• Pesticide applicator license (or ability to obtain within 2 months).
REPORTS TO:
Director of Operations
JOB GOAL:
The District Grounds Specialist is responsible for supporting and enhancing grounds maintenance operations across all Tupelo Public School District campuses. The role provides expertise in turfgrass management, horticulture, irrigation systems, and campus-wide landscape planning.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
• District-Wide Grounds Management:
• Develop and implement district-wide grounds standards
• Evaluate campuses and recommend improvement plans
• Establish seasonal maintenance schedules
Turf & Landscape Oversight:
• Oversee fertilization, aeration, overseeding, and soil programs
• Monitor and assist with irrigation systems
• Diagnose turf and plant health issues
Operational Support:
• Collaborate with district support team
• Assist with equipment planning and lifecycle recommendations
• Support district-wide events and storm response
Training & Leadership:
• Provide mentorship and training to grounds personnel
• Promote safety standards and compliance
• Perform other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of the job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and to talk or to hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms such as to operate vibrating machinery and construction equipment and tools. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and to climb stairs and ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.
Outdoor work in all seasonal conditions
• Frequent travel between district campuses
• Ability to lift 50 pounds
• Operation of commercial grounds equipment as needed
