Job description

SUMMARY

Landscapers perform work involving the following duties: plant, cultivate, fertilize, water and spray ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, lawns, and flowers; rake leaves; hoe weeds; clean trash from assigned areas including parking lots; prepare and treat soils for planting; maintain hoses, sprinklers, tools, supplies and equipment in proper condition and repair; trim trees. Hedges, and shrubs and erect tree supports; may operate and perform minor maintenance on small power-operated pavement sweepers, power mowers, small riding mowers, and other gardening power equipment; may assist in the preparing and lining of athletic fields for events; may occasionally assist a qualified specialist in sprinkler repair, spraying, tree trimming, or nursery functions; may drive pick-ups and other automotive equipment in performance of assigned duties; and assist maintenance workers as assigned

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES ASSIGNED:

  • Performs routine and project maintenance of GCCR Campus to include lawns, interior and exterior planted materials (trees, bushes, plants, etc.), sidewalks, parking lots, driveways, trash receptacles, outside furnishings and equipment, patios, decks, artwork, fences, recreation fields, and other areas
  • Assists Landscape Crew Leader in diagnosing and troubleshooting grounds keeping and landscaping issues including pest control, soil conditions, drainage, tree, shrubbery, turf and plant selections, and other similar problems.
  • Operates large power and field mowers, hand tools, and large vehicles associated with ground maintenance and landscaping activities.
  • May be called upon to perform or assist in the work of other maintenance personnel including, but not limited to, outside construction workers, groundskeepers, painters, and outside contractors
  • Mow lawns; rake leaves; sweep walkways; plant, cultivate, fertilize, prune, trim and otherwise maintain lawns, flowers, ground covers, shrubs, and trees.
  • Water lawns, shrubs, groundcover and may use appropriate manual or automatic systems or hoses when necessary.
  • Under close supervision, apply weed control chemicals. Set out bait and/or traps for gophers, ground squirrels and the like, and dispose of carcasses in accordance with procedures.
  • Plants, cultivates, fertilizes, waters and spray ornamental plants, shrubs, hedges, trees, lawns, and flowers.
  • Responsible for using the proper personal protective equipment on the various tasks (safety glasses, safety vest, etc.).
  • Load, unload and move grounds related supplies and equipment.
  • Assist with graffiti removal.
  • Clean parking lot drains and gutters; remove and dispose of trash and other debris.
  • Assist in parking management, including providing stations and signage for parking, as approved by management.
  • Participate in the maintenance and setting up and tear down for events
  • Ability to assist with irrigation scheduling and maintenance to include control panel trouble shooting, programming and replacements.
  • Operate and perform maintenance on small power-operated pavement sweepers, power mowers, small riding mowers and other gardening power equipment.
  • Drives pick-ups and other automotive equipment in performance of assigned duties.
  • Maintains a safe and clean work environment.
  • Grooms’ fields, paints and repairs benches, recreation equipment, tables, and fences
  • Operates, cleans, and maintains power driven equipment such as lawn mowers, lawn edger’s, clippers, rototillers, tractors, trucks, sweepers, blowers, and other grounds maintenance tools and equipment as assigned
  • Reports low inventory of existing stock; recommends supply orders for materials and equipment.
  • Checks that all chemicals are properly identified before use and have proper Safety Data Sheet (SDS) labels.
  • Assist in walk through of all areas and follows-up on completion of landscaping projects/tasks.
  • Reports all unsafe conditions to management.
  • Performs preventative maintenance checks on all facility grounds equipment.
  • Report and coordinates irrigation repairs and replacement with Crew Lead as needed.
  • Uses a variety of non-restricted chemicals to exterminate weeds, insects, rodents, aphids, and other pests
  • Installs, programs, monitors, troubleshoots, repairs irrigation systems and water features
  • Paints exterior horizontal surfaces, such as parking lot striping and curbs, as well as unoccupied structures, such as storage sheds and/or containers, and similar assignments
  • Inventories landscaping supplies and makes recommendations for the purchase or repair of equipment, chemicals, and supplies
  • Responsible for maintaining the highest degree of confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical business conduct.
  • Assist building services workers as directed by Landscape Supervisor
  • Team members who receive phone allowances or are provided with phones must be willing to respond to phone calls, text, or emails during unscheduled hours.
  • Proficient with mobile smart devices. This includes the basics of texting, email, and application management.
  • Report to work after hours in case of emergencies
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Must pass initial drug screening, background investigation, and random drug tests.

  • One year of experience in the care and maintenance of landscaped areas or in general grounds maintenance work, or in related manual labor
  • Thorough knowledge of general gardening and grounds maintenance methods. General knowledge of proper methods of planting, cultivating, and caring for hedges, ornamental trees, shrubs, lawns, and flowers as well as the use and care of gardening materials, tools, and equipment
  • Candidate must possess a valid California driver's license.
  • Ability and specialized skills to recognize the more common species of ornamental shrubs, trees and flowers grown in California; perform strenuous physical work as described above; utilize mechanical aptitude and motor coordination
  • Experience in the operation of common mechanical and electrical equipment related to gardening, landscaping, and grounds maintenance
  • Skill in working effectively as part of a customer service team
  • Skill in reading, comprehending, and following oral and written instructions and directions
  • Must have certification for to operate a boom, scissor, and forklift. (GCCR will provide training)
  • Knowledge of safety procedures, equipment, and supplies applicable to gardening, landscape, hardscape, and grounds maintenance
  • Knowledge and skill in installing, maintaining, and repairing irrigation systems and controls
  • Ability to work independently with general supervision to accomplish assigned tasks.

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, and procedure and technical manuals.

MINIMUM EDUCATION REQUIRED:

Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance, including reading and interpreting sketches, blueprints, and diagrams.

MATHMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions, both oral and written

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those a team member encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of his job, the team member regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to risk of dust and toxic materials. The team member works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to extreme heat and cold. When inside the casino, the team member must be able to tolerate cigarette smoke.
