Can I landscape with no experience?

Landscape design as a profession typically requires some knowledge of plants, materials, and design principles, but entry-level positions often do not require prior experience. Beginners can start by learning basic landscape concepts, using tools like design software, and gaining hands-on experience through apprenticeships or volunteering. Developing skills in plant identification and understanding site conditions can improve job prospects over time.

What are some common challenges faced by landscape designers when working on client projects?

Landscape designers often encounter challenges such as balancing client expectations with site limitations, adhering to local regulations, and ensuring sustainable practices. Managing project timelines and coordinating with contractors, architects, and horticulturists are also key aspects that require strong communication and organizational skills. Adapting designs to changing budgets or environmental conditions is common, so flexibility and creative problem-solving are essential in this role.

What is the difference between Landscape Design vs Landscape Architecture?

AspectLandscape DesignLandscape Architecture
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in landscape design or related field; certification may include landscape design certificatesRequires a professional license (e.g., Landscape Architect license), often a degree in landscape architecture

While both roles focus on outdoor spaces, Landscape Design primarily emphasizes aesthetic and functional aspects for clients, often on smaller projects. Landscape Architecture involves comprehensive planning, technical design, and regulatory considerations for larger, complex projects. Both professions require a strong understanding of design principles, but Landscape Architects have additional licensing and technical responsibilities.

What is landscape design?

Landscape design is the art and practice of planning and arranging outdoor spaces such as gardens, parks, and yards to achieve aesthetic, functional, and environmental goals. It involves selecting and organizing plants, hardscapes, water features, and other elements to create harmonious and sustainable environments. Landscape designers consider factors like climate, soil, site conditions, and client preferences to develop practical and visually pleasing layouts.

Is there a demand for landscape designers?

Landscape designers are in steady demand as they help create sustainable and aesthetically pleasing outdoor spaces. Employment opportunities are expected to grow as environmental awareness increases and urban development continues, often requiring skills in design software and knowledge of horticulture. Job prospects are generally favorable for those with relevant certifications and experience.

What landscaping job pays the most?

In landscaping, supervisory roles such as landscape project managers or design directors tend to have the highest salaries, often exceeding $70,000 annually. Specialized skills in landscape architecture, horticulture, or environmental design, along with certifications and experience, can lead to higher-paying positions in the field.

Is landscape design hard to get into?

Landscape design can be competitive, especially for entry-level positions, but gaining relevant skills in design software, horticulture, and environmental planning can improve job prospects. Many roles require a combination of education, experience, and sometimes certification, making persistence and building a portfolio important for success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Landscape Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Landscape Designer, you need a solid foundation in horticulture, site planning, and design principles, often supported by a degree in landscape architecture or a related field. Proficiency in CAD software, GIS mapping tools, and graphic design programs is typically required, along with knowledge of local environmental regulations. Creativity, strong communication, and project management skills set outstanding designers apart, enabling effective collaboration and client satisfaction. These skills are crucial for producing functional, sustainable, and visually appealing outdoor spaces that meet both client needs and ecological considerations.

Job description

STV's Owings Mills, MD office is seeking a Landscape Designer II to join our Buildings Division, supporting work across our Land Development Group. Our landscape architecture team delivers planning, site design, and project implementation services for a diverse range of urban redevelopment, campus, commercial, institutional, residential, and infrastructurerelated projects throughout the Baltimore Metropolitan region and beyond.

This role is ideal for an experienced landscape designer who is excited to collaborate, contribute meaningfully to complex projects, and continue progressing toward professional licensure within a multidisciplinary, supportive environment.

As a Landscape Designer II, you will work alongside Landscape Architects, Civil Engineers, Architects, and project managers, contributing across the full project lifecycle-from early concepts through construction-while strengthening both technical and design leadership skills.

Why This Role Is a Great Opportunity

This position offers increasing responsibility paired with mentorship and collaboration, making it well suited for a senior designer preparing for the next step in their career.

In this role, you will:

  • Work on diverse, highvisibility projects, including education, mixeduse, housing, commercial, institutional, and infrastructurerelated development
  • Build advanced experience in both design and technical production, including site planning, planting and hardscape design, grading, and permitting
  • Support projects from concept through construction in a realworld land development setting
  • Continue developing design confidence, technical judgment, and professional leadership

What You'll Do

  • Develop site and landscape designs for land development, building, and transportation projects, including site layout, grading, landform design, planting and hardscape layouts, and coordination drawings
  • Prepare and support presentation materials, construction documents, permit packages, and construction support activities
  • Perform site investigations, inventories, and analysis to inform clear, defensible design decisions
  • Design sustainable, contextsensitive landscapes, including urban environments and onstructure podium conditions
  • Prepare technical documentation, exhibits, and feasibility materials with guidance from senior staff
  • Coordinate with project managers and design partners to support project goals, schedules, and deliverables
  • Participate in client meetings, agency coordination meetings, and public hearings (e.g., Planning Board, Site Development Review Committee)
  • Work efficiently across multiple concurrent projects, contributing reliably to parallel schedules and priorities

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Landscape Architecture or Urban Planning from an accredited program
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience as a Landscape Designer, preferably within land development or multidisciplinary environments
  • Demonstrated progress toward Landscape Architect licensure
  • Strong interest in site planning, site analysis, grading, and urban design principles
  • Proficiency in MicroStation, and AutoCAD (experience with Civil3D, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, Enscape, or Land F/X is a plus)
  • Familiarity with Maryland permitting processes (Baltimore City experience is a plus)
  • Familiarity with native and adaptive plant materials appropriate to the Northeastern region
  • Strong communication, organization, and problemsolving skills
  • A collaborative, teamoriented mindset and ability to work independently with minimal direction

Field & Site Work

This role includes periodic fieldwork and site visits, which may involve time outdoors, uneven terrain, and varying weather conditions, balanced with officebased design, coordination, and production work.

Compensation Range:

$79,979.92 - $91,405.62
