Interns work under the supervision of licensed landscape architects, assisting with tasks such as site analysis, design development, drafting, and project presentations. This experience helps interns build practical skills, develop their portfolios, and understand the day-to-day responsibilities of professional landscape architects. Internships are often a requirement or strong recommendation for completing a landscape architecture degree and can improve job prospects after graduation.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a landscape architecture internship?

As a Landscape Architecture Intern, you will typically assist with site analysis, conceptual design development, drafting plans using software like AutoCAD or SketchUp, and preparing presentations for clients or internal reviews. Interns often support senior landscape architects by conducting research on plant materials, sustainability practices, and zoning codes. You may also participate in site visits, attend team meetings, and contribute to collaborative brainstorming sessions. This hands-on exposure provides insight into the full project life cycle and helps you develop both technical and creative skills within a professional studio environment.

To excel as a Landscape Architecture Intern, a solid background in landscape design principles, site analysis, and proficiency in drafting supported by enrollment in or completion of a landscape architecture program is essential. Familiarity with tools such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, and GIS software is typically required. Strong communication, creativity, and teamwork skills help interns effectively contribute ideas and collaborate with design teams and clients.
