What is a land surveyor in training?

A Land Surveyor In Training (LSIT) is an entry-level professional who has met specific educational requirements and passed a certification exam, but has not yet obtained full licensure as a land surveyor. LSITs work under the supervision of licensed land surveyors to gain practical experience in measuring land, establishing property boundaries, and preparing maps or legal documents. This role is a critical step toward becoming a fully licensed Professional Land Surveyor (PLS), as it provides hands-on experience and develops the skills necessary for independent practice.

What does a land surveyor in training do?

As a Land Surveyor In Training, you'll spend much of your time assisting licensed surveyors with fieldwork such as measuring land boundaries, setting up survey equipment, and collecting data. You may also help process survey data, draft maps, and prepare reports in the office. This role requires close collaboration with survey teams and other professionals like engineers, ensuring data accuracy and compliance with regulations. It's a hands-on learning opportunity that helps you build the technical skills and experience necessary for eventual licensure.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a land surveyor in training?

To excel as a Land Surveyor In Training, you need a solid understanding of mathematics, geography, and surveying principles, usually supported by a relevant degree or coursework.
