What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a LabVIEW Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a LabVIEW Developer, you need strong expertise in graphical programming, experience with test automation, and a background in engineering or computer science. Familiarity with National Instruments LabVIEW software, DAQ hardware, and certifications like Certified LabVIEW Developer (CLD) are typically required. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating on complex projects and troubleshooting issues. These skills ensure efficient system development, reliable test automation, and smooth team collaboration in high-tech environments.

How much do LabVIEW programmers make?

LabVIEW programmers' salaries vary based on experience, location, and industry, but the average annual salary in the United States typically ranges from $70,000 to $110,000. Senior or specialized developers with certifications and extensive skills in automation and data acquisition can earn higher wages, especially in high-demand sectors like aerospace, automotive, and research labs.

Is LabVIEW a good career?

LabVIEW development is a specialized field focused on designing and implementing test, measurement, and control systems using National Instruments' graphical programming environment. It offers opportunities in industries such as automation, aerospace, and manufacturing, often requiring knowledge of hardware integration and signal processing. Career prospects depend on industry demand and technical skills, with certifications potentially enhancing job prospects.

What is the difference between Labview Development vs Test Automation Engineer?

AspectLabview DevelopmentTest Automation Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically requires a degree in engineering or computer science, with LabVIEW certification often preferred.Requires a degree in engineering, computer science, or related field; certifications in testing tools are common.
Work EnvironmentPrimarily lab and development settings, working on hardware integration and data acquisition.Mostly office and lab environments, focusing on designing and executing automated tests.
Industry UsageUsed in manufacturing, aerospace, and research for data acquisition and control systems.Common in electronics, automotive, and software industries for quality assurance and testing.

While both roles involve testing and data analysis, Labview Development focuses on creating software for hardware control and data acquisition, whereas Test Automation Engineers design and implement automated testing processes to ensure product quality.

What are some common challenges faced by LabVIEW Developers and how can they be addressed?

LabVIEW Developers often face challenges such as integrating LabVIEW with legacy hardware, managing large and complex codebases, and ensuring efficient collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. To address these, developers should maintain clear documentation, utilize LabVIEW's modular programming features, and follow best practices for version control. Regular code reviews and open communication with hardware engineers and project managers also help streamline development and troubleshoot issues quickly.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

In LabVIEW development, experienced professionals working in specialized automation, testing, or data acquisition roles can earn around $10,000 per month, especially with advanced skills and certifications. High-level freelance or consulting positions in this field may also reach this income level without a formal degree, relying instead on expertise and project demand.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

Highly experienced engineers in specialized fields such as software engineering, petroleum engineering, or aerospace engineering can earn $500,000 or more annually, often through a combination of base salary, bonuses, and stock options. Senior roles requiring advanced skills, certifications, and leadership responsibilities tend to have the highest compensation levels.

What is LabVIEW development?

LabVIEW development refers to the process of designing, creating, and maintaining applications using LabVIEW, which is a graphical programming environment developed by National Instruments. LabVIEW is widely used for data acquisition, instrument control, and industrial automation. Developers use LabVIEW's visual interface to create programs, or 'virtual instruments,' by connecting functional blocks instead of writing traditional code. This approach is especially popular in engineering, scientific research, and manufacturing settings where rapid prototyping and hardware integration are essential.

Job description

Description
The Weiss laboratory at NYU seeks highly motivated and multidisciplinary Postdoctoral Associate to join our team. This role sits at the intersection of fundamental biophysics and advanced instrumentation. You will be responsible for designing, building, and utilizing single-walled carbon nanotube field effect transistor (SWNT FET) sensors to probe biological phenomena at the single-molecule level. See Turvey et al. (2022) Science Advances. 8: eabl3522, as an example of the type of experiment planned.
In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $62,500/yr - $62,500/yr based on experience. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
Key Responsibilities
  • System Development: Design and iterate custom-built single-molecule measurement platforms SWNT FET biosensors.
  • Hardware Integration: Apply basic electrical engineering principles to interface biological sensors with low-noise, data acquisition hardware.
  • Data Acquisition: Execute complex experiments involving high-bandwidth electrical measurements and advanced microscopy imaging (i.e., AFM and SEM)
  • Signal Processing: Develop pipelines to extract biological signals from noisy data sets using Python, MATLAB, and/or LabVIEW.
  • Collaboration: Work alongside biologists to translate raw sensor data into insights explaining the mechanisms governing how enzymes and cells work.

In addition, you will be responsible for maintaining laboratory notebooks, handling confidential data, and following safety regulations.
What We Offer
  • Access to state-of-the-art facilities for imaging and fabrication.
  • A highly collaborative environment where chemistry, biology, physics, and engineering are not siloed.
  • Mentorship focused on academic publication, proposal writing, and potential intellectual property/patent development

Qualifications
Ph.D. degree or equivalent in a relevant field (e.g., chemistry, electrical or biomedical engineering, etc.) and a minimum of 5 years of relevant research experience.
Application Instructions
Please provide contact information for three professional references, a CV with a full list of publications, and a cover letter detailing your experience in building versus using instrumentation.
