Job description

UL Solutions is hiring a Laboratory Assistant to join our Fiber Analysis lab at the Retail and Consumer Products Center of Excellence.
This role is on 2nd Shift, which is 2pm to 10:30pm, Monday through Friday.

  • Some university education (equivalent to an Associate's degree) in Chemistry or a related discipline, plus generally two years of laboratory experience.
  • Knowledge of wet chemistry techniques, including titrations and microscopic analysis.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to interact with customers.
  • Desire to work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office suite is a must.

  • Under direct supervision, performs specialized laboratory testing and analyses.  
  • Determines and assigns testing to samples submitted to the laboratory. 
  • Performs selection and collection of test specimens.  
  • Perform routine tests and procedures and utilizes AATCC practices and internal SOPs.
  • Performs complex/non-routine or detailed tests and analyses.
  • Performs calculations, prepares reports, and assesses proper calibration and standardization of equipment and procedures.
  • Implements tests and procedures requiring selection and adaptation of test equipment and test procedures with lab management supervision.
  • Records and analyzes data and prepares written reports.
  • Builds and/or adapts basic setup and test equipment for performance of tests.
  • Performs tests using general laboratory equipment.
  • Performs routine care of designated test equipment and work area.
  • Operates computer terminal to extract/input readily available information and to use available software.
  • As directed follows defined test plans and datasheets.
  • Evaluates test performance and sample operation to properly evaluate test results.
  • Records and explains test results.
  • Reads and interprets results of tests.
  • Prepares charts, graphs and reports to explain test results.
  • Examines test samples, reads measuring instruments and reviews test data with supervisor.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams and operational instructions.
  • As instructed examines customer samples and learns to operate basic tests for each case.
  • Communicates with customers during setup and operation to ensure proper evaluation.
  • Operates designated laboratory equipment and tools as directed.
  • Receives instructions from and reports data to  engineers and other laboratory technician staff.
  • Records observed or calculated data on appropriate data sheets.
  • Develops working knowledge of the job, methods, instrumentation and systems.
  • Integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
  • Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and follow all physical and digital security practices.
  • Performs other duties as directed.
